I have seen nothing to indicate that the Rebbe was joking about making a b'dieved eruv so that yidden aren't being mechalel shabbos, whether that's in CH, Manhattan, or Melbourne. And it boggles my mind to suggest that this was hyperbole.

And then to suggest the Rebbe was serious about a secret Manhattan and Melbourne eruv, but he was joking about CH, based on you not feeling what the Rebbe said could be possible in one of those 3 cases?!?

The Rebbe wasn't joking in any of those cases. I suggest you ask around what the people that got the responses ended up doing.

Similarly, the Rebbe said they could build/expand 770 if they stick to a budget under $1MM.

Why did the Rebbe say what he said in those ways is not for me to figure out. But I have no doubt that the Rebbe knows exactly what he is saying and what the outcome of his words would be.

The Rebbe suggested many times that an Eruv should only be done in secret. I have never heard anyone suggest the Rebbe was merely joking about these suggestions!

The current eruv went up without anyone knowing until they announced it was built already. And even if not, this is a question entirely of your own making. As a rule, the Rebbe didn't play word games and shtick with people (unless it would embarrass someone). If the Rebbe didn't want an eruv, he would not have minced his words.

So the Rebbe didn't know that when he told רבני אנ"ש that an eruv can only be done secretly (doesn't seem to be the case in Kfar Chabad) that they would end up not erecting or participating?

As I stated above, I have no idea why the Rebbe posed it the way he did, but I have no doubt that the Rebbe knew that his words would be taken as a suggestion NOT to erect one.

Maybe the “secret” was meant more for context. Put up an unpublished Eruv where no weekly notice comes up that it was checked and it’s Kosher, as a bdieved for someone who carried.

I’m not suggesting that’s what the Rebbe meant, or that I know what the Rebbe meant, but to me it sounds less farfetched than your interpretation

Even a slight knowledge of human nature makes clear that doing so would be worse than making a public eruv.

There is a major difference between "make an eruv in secret" and "don't make an eruv unless it is secret."

The first is in support of an eruv. The second means that practically speaking it should not be built.

Did the Rebbe say anything about what stage it becomes public knowledge?



And just as a side note, what happened in front of 770 after Simchas Torah proves the Rebbe's point. So many people got used to carry between 770 and the tent during Tishrei, that when it was modified/taken down countless people were נכשל.
