And Tefillin is not a מצוות עשה דאורייתא? Anyway, you're conflating two separate issues, eating before a מצוה is only a problem when one eats a כביצה, while eating before davening is prohibited entirely.
Hunger to the extent which causes difficulty concentrating would allow eating before davening but not before מצוות AFAIK.

True but he's allowed to satisfy his hunger with less than a כביצה and coffee etc. and that is allowed before shofar as well.

(only hypothetical situation I can see a difference is when one needs more than a כביצה mezonos to be able to concentrate, that's where shabbos because no teffilin and RH because of shofar, differs)

This explains why only after davening since it is my on being after shofar

That would imply that on R”H that falls out on Shabbos sleep might not be an issue even before chatzos.

If anything it would be assur even after chatzos on shabbos. I suppose zichron treuah works for this though.

Interesting, is there something from the Rebbe about this? The Riyatz apparently said not to.

Source? I’ve never heard that before

https://shulchanaruchharav.com/halacha/eating-and-drinking-before-davening/#_ftnref4

Quote
Tefillin before Shema and eating:[6] If one is eating before Davening, then he is not to say the morning Shema until he puts on Tefillin. Nevertheless, the custom amongst most Chassidim is not to wear Tefillin when saying Shema prior to Davening, even after sunrise. However, some Chassidim are accustomed to wearing Tefillin upon reciting Shema prior to Davening , and so was the directive of the Rebbe Rashab and Rebbe Rayatz. This is not the widespread Chabad custom

Although I can't make out the eating part.

Are Lubavitchers makpid to wear tfellin before eating?

I guess this goes back to the definition of a Lubavitcher. In my book, it's an aspiration. So those with a stronger aspiration definitely do, but IINM there aren't too many of those. I recall driving Rabbi Marlow A"H for a surprise Shechita inspection, as soon as it was zman he had me stop at the side of the road, put on tefillin and said Krias Shema. After he was done we continued on the trip. He could be seen davening at 11am in 770, when very few knew that he put on tefillin and said Shema several hours earlier.

On a side note, different people have their aspirations affect them in different ways. DS takes an entire carry-on full of seforim when he travels so that he can fulfill his learning obligations which are driven by his aspiration to be a Lubavitcher.

The Rayatz's letter implies that those with a stronger aspiration are allowed to eat before davening due to their proper concentration concerns, while the הקורא קריאת שמע בלא תפילין כאילו מעיד עדות שקר בעצמו issue is a given for everyone to follow. What you're saying and what seems to be the Chabad widespread custom today seems to be the opposite, that everybody gets to eat before davening while only the יחידי סגולה are makpid on putting on teffilin with first Shema.

In other news, the most shocked facial expressions you'll ever see, are from non-lubavitchers in a Chabad shul for shachris this week.

When did Chabad stop saying slichos עשרת ימי תשובה?

In order not to discriminate against tzugekumeners.

Today in slichos we said "קול מבשר ישמע בעולם, לגאול עם גזע גבעות עולם". :)

In tomchei tmimim bochurim would get heter from Rebbe rashab to eat before davening (with consultation with hanholo regarding the bochurs avoda of tefilla), some was hamotzie, some was mezonos, some was only tea

Interesting, where is this from? And does it give a source for the מימרא of the צמח צדק?

And yet, mezonos is universal today.
Could be practical.

1. It's what people want.

2. Yeshiva doesn't give enough time for mezonos and bentching.
