My guess is they pissed off a manager/owner of a property with their antics enough that the manager pushed it up to corporate.

Hyatt has never shown any kind of widespread punitive behavior.  Even when they "cracked down" a few years ago on second guest bookings it was by sending out strongly worded warning letters to knock it off.  This is, so far, an isolated case of one account closure.

Interesting thought, I had such a situation where I had an issue and a cooperate "lawyer talk" type of guy called me but never shut my account or threatened to.
Marriott most likely never had someone face a consumer the way this guy talked to me, they got some tough people in the back office that don't really care about the wording of T&C (as in my case, I have it in writing), the guy basically told and wrote to me to go jump in the lake and he will do as pleased, he flagrantly didn't care what the T&C state. .

Seems harsh to ban him from the complete program for that

Don't know the details or if speculation is correct, but as a general rule, many if not all property's have a lot of influence over some program details.
Such as, some property's have been flouting the T&C in regards to reward availability and nothing happens, its simple math,  the hotel is worth more to them then a members dollar/s...
If the rules the hotels are flouting create enough of a tumult or degrade program participation enough to make a difference then stuff may change.. but it all circles back to the DOLLAR.

Is it time to open a thread for this?

Something like that happening in the US would be more concerning. Additionally we don't know if the guy who had his account closed is being fully truthful (I assume not)

Would depend on what the antics where and how long he was doing it.  Might have had it coming.

There's always more to the story then what they admit.
