The pipeline is a direct attack on Germany, as blocking it will cause higher energy costs for most German consumers. They wouldn't have let it slide. China doesn't really want a role in a global financial system, they have capital controls to devalue their currency and don't allow it to float freely.

A senior German government official said, in response to the pipeline sanctions, that Germany would make a renewed European push to build a firewall against U.S. sanctions when it takes over the EU’s rotating presidency next year.

One goal would be to create a separate financial infrastructure that would allow European companies to escape the scope of U.S. sanctions. The banks involved would have to be based in jurisdictions out of the U.S.’s reach, such as China or possibly Russia, the official said.

“Washington is treating the EU as an adversary. It is dealing the same way with Mexico, Canada, and with allies in Asia. This policy will provoke counter-reactions across the world,” this official said.

Some European officials have even toyed with the idea of adopting sanctions of their own against the U.S., for instance to deter policies they think endanger the environment.

“What if the EU parliament would sanction the Keystone pipeline on environmental grounds,” a senior German diplomat asked, speaking to The Wall Street Journal this week, in reference to the oil pipeline connecting Canada and the U.S. that has been opposed by environmentalists in both countries.

Building a shield against U.S. sanctions is difficult because of the size of the U.S. economy, the role of the dollar in international transactions, and the fact that the U.S. has control over much of the world’s financial plumbing.

Between the lines: This planned move also sets up a bizarre situation in which the Biden administration will be sanctioning ships involved in the building of Nord Stream 2 but refusing to sanction the actual company in charge of the project.

Sources close to the situation say that top Biden officials have determined that the only way to potentially stop the project — which is 95% complete — is to sanction the German end users of the gas.
And the Biden administration is not willing to rupture its relationship with Germany over Nord Stream 2.

This is a full blown German project. There are plenty of sanctions that could've been imposed against Russian aggression without direct impact on Europe.

I will openly admit that I did not put even one ounce of effort into reviewing the merits. When every single person says EXACTLY what they would be expected to say that leads in one direction only.

Yeah if it was something really worth researching I would, but until then Just as Sally Cohen and Sean Hannity are worthy of having their opinions of whether or not something was malicious or makes sense ignored so are others-very often yours.

The sanctions were passed specifically in order to stop this pipeline. The reason Russia wants this pipeline is in order to bypass Ukraine, so that they can cut off gas supply to Ukraine without pissing off the rest of Europe.
