Pretty meaningless. No seasonal adjustment. I bought eggs for $1.17/dz. IIRC during COVID-19 eggs were distributed for free (along with blue milk), so that's real hyperinflation!  :P

There’s no chance this person’s sampling is representative 3.6%?
over 2.5 months? That's pretty steep.
I wonder what people who type "u" instead of "you" do with all their free time.

DDF and man on the street virology and epidemiology ideas look like PhD works compared to this inflation index.

The author is writing these articles to bring the unique frum economic issues to the public forum, and galvanize a push for better data. This negative reaction is likely part of his strategy.

You know inflation isn't transitory when an 8.5% headline doesn't generate a single post in this thread...

Is the weight on the label different? If not, there's probably legal recourse.

Standard pesach packaging.

Standard pesach packaging.

And year round for spices. Cover 90% of the container with label and fill to 50%.

These pictures look somewhat extreme, but in general, I have been in plants packaging powder products and saw that when they are filled they are close to the top with some room to prevent spillag at which point they are weighed to ensure proper product quantity. By the time it reaches the end of the line there is already very noticeable settling that occurred and when buying it retail the container looks like it was underfilled.

Specific to spices, many companies want to keep a uniform container size and uniform pricing and simply adjust the fill to account for the differences.

It’s an old problem called slack fill in the industry. It is deceptive and illegal both by federal and most state law but cases are rarely prosecuted and won. Consumer reports used to have Black Hole awards where readers would submit the most outrageous examples.

The are actually halachos in choshen mishpat regarding this. If it is not possible for the consumer to discern the missing product prior to purchase, AND the item commonly has more product it is likely mekach ta’us as nd actionable in beis din. If one started to use the product after opening it would get into a complex machlokes among the rishonim and poskim.

Saying good, but I haven't seen this from non-Jewish brands. Nor should they cover the entire container with a label, leave space to see the actual contents.
