Isn't it all in US Government securities not traded or available to the public?
Only on DDF does 24/6 mean 24/5/half/half

Like I said... they hold IOUs not tradable bonds

To answer the thread title, it might be far on the horizon, but in the meantime the deflationary forces are just so great that no inflation is in sight.

This didn't age well...

Is that an answer to Why not? Are you suggesting it's locked up because the government can't pull all that money out of US debt without causing ripples?

Otherwise, while US debt has historically been stable, the returns suck.

It's too late now, the money is needed too soon, there is no way to guarantee a better return than bonds at this point. If the money was invested in the S&P 500 since the early days of SS there would be more than enough money to go around.
I wonder what people who type "u" instead of "you" do with all their free time.

If we all invested back then we wouldn't need SS.  :)

Otherwise, while US debt has historically been stable, the returns suck.

There are laws that govern how the "trust fund" can be invested. The laws were not designed to chase returns but rather to ensure solvency.

We are now in the draw down phase... the fund is de-accumulating slowly. There's no reason to "pull all the money out" because most of the payout obligations are long-term, but the small amounts each year that need to be converted to cash must come either from budget dollars or from new debt sold to outside buyers. That's a big change from the years and years of borrowing from the trust fund.

There was talk in Washington (I think in the 90's) about letting SS invest some of their fund in the stock market but many were opposed and ultimately nothing came of it.

Would you really want the government investing our money?

States do it all the time. I think this was part of the fight to make ss private.

To me it sounds like a terrible idea to invest SS funds into the stock market. The massive sums of money invested would create a massive bubble in the market, eventually causing the mother of all crashes, killing the economy and being forced to liquidate shares at extremely depressed prices.

What does that tell us about inflation?

Last time you checked recessions are deflationary.
