What is your (anyone) definition for hyperinflation?

Read the post.

But seriously, my point was that when an average person uses the term "hyperinflation" we don't expect that to necessarily be accurate according to academic definitions, as others here just said.

When inflation is noticeable, it is too fast. And people will say its hyperinflation even if that's not the right term. So when pedantics chime in with their "akshully"s it doesn't contribute anything to the conversation except nuisance. Inflation is affecting all of us in a very serious way right now, do not be dismissive.

It is hard to have a discussion when everyone has a different meaning for the same word. That is how 100 page arguments start when you are actually agreeing but don't know it. I am not being dismissive at all. Inflation is real but it does not affect us all the same way.

All I picked up in this article was inclusive and equality and other political buzzwords.

Quote
While notable, this price surge does not herald a return to a 1970s scenario of double-digit inflation rates.

Just thought this is an important quote from a respected expert, negating the "hyper" in hyperinflation, even when colloquially speaking and not real hyperinflation a-la Weimar Republic or Zimbabwe.

Got it. What do we do if it seems that many items do have double digits increases in price?

Is that the same as a double digit increase in inflation rate?

"Many items" having double digit increases, might just be a generational catch-up (as Ritholtz pointed out last week IINM). That doesn't mean inflation or some spiraling price action.

This is extreme inflation, but hasn't reached the levels of hyper inflation.

Now go write an article for yahoo finance using that as your headline and make a payday
