The Zohar (part of it at least) was written on the day of the Rashbi's death. It could be he was choizer later.

In any case, why don't you check the Peirush on Shekalim from the Kamarna, Pnei Zakan, that's where you would most likely find the answer to this question. Or you can look up his peirush on the Zohar, too.
