Sign up for hotel branded Amex with spouse's hotel account

If I am signing up one spouse for the Amex Hilton Surpass, but only the other spouse has a Hilton Honors acct, can I input the other spouse's Hilton number in the application to get points credited there - or do I need to start a new Hilton account for the new Amex card holder and transfer the points to the spouse's account?

Start new account. IIRC they verify the account name with the hotel.  that's also why it takes longer to get a hotel or airline card in the mail then the rest
