Dressers
« on: April 13, 2021, 10:54:22 AM »
Hi, I'm looking to buy dressers for my kids. Contemplating getting something from IKEA, but wondering if there are better options in that price range ($150-300).

Open to getting used, but aside from craigslist, are there any other good sources?

For IKEA, assemble them snug and use wood glue when assembling (inside, so it doesn’t show). also, don’t overload the drawers or get drawers with metal support, otherwise the cardboard caves in. Also, make sure to mount them to the wall, especially if your have younger children or children who will climb/put weight on/hang from the open drawers.

Looked at wayfair.
They have great customer service if anything goes wrong, which I hear isn't nesscarily the case with ikea

For both IKEA and Wayfair, do you recommend any particular models?

Hemnes is great, change the knobs for a high end look.

It’s a bit clunky and masculine, they have some gentler styles.

(Disclaimer, I have a whole bunch of Hemnes stuff, though most of the bookshelves didn’t survive my first move after holding my Seforim for 2 years).

Seforim should only go on solid wood.

Couldn’t afford that at the time.

I got a wide one  but wouldn't reccomend that for kids room. Something like this:
https://www.wayfair.com/furniture/pdp/andover-mills-legrand-5-drawer-chest-w004899637.html
Looks better

I believe Hemnes is solid wood, except for drawer bottoms, bookcase backs, and the like.  IKEA used to sell a brand called Markor which was really solid--better quality than Hemnes--but that was discontinued about a decade ago.  Personally, I'm not too impressed with the Hemnes furniture that we have.  And, as someone may have mentioned, IKEA customer service is not exactly winning any awards.

Considering this for a bookcase. Any thoughts or better idea?

Should last for 4-7 years (a very rough estimate) depending how much weight you put on it, solid wood will last forever.
In addition solid wood won't bend, while plywood will sag and not look great.

I have sefarim on Billy bookcases for about 5 years and there's only a very very slight sag
Workflowy. You won't know what you're missing until you try it.

Wow. I was told to stay away of those and to go for the Liatorp instead. But I like much better the look of this.

Those both look a lot nicer than Billy but the price is a lot higher. I don't think mine will last forever but I didn't expect them to... so far I've been very happy. They sell extension units (aka an extra shelf) for the top which are great (and you can buy extra shelves too). FWIW we put the heaviest sefarim (shas etc) on the very bottom shelf. You can also get doors for the bottom half if you want but I didn't bother.

Keep in mind max shelf weight is 66lbs, and it’s 46” wide so that’s a lot of books per shelf. Standard size seforim (I think 9”x12” or so) should be fine, but if you have bigger Mishnayos, Gemara, Rambam, Shulchan Aruch etc, you’re going to want to only put them on the bottom shelf like etech0 said.
