Companies being held to more transparency often helps the consumer. But calling a cereal waffle crisps and honeycomb clearly aren't trying to hide their sugars.

And raisin bran?

I'm not signing up to get 47 cents, or whatever, but cereals have always been marketed as a quasi health food, and Post has been as guilty as any

The raisin bran one is a bit different and should have been in its own lawsuit. The carbs on the nutrition information don't add up to the breakdown they include
possibly becausee of unspecified sugars added to the product.

Even for the sugar cereals...I remember being shocked when I looked at the ingredients for Golden Crisps, and seeing sugar listed as the first ingredient.

Yup. Or something. Thanks for pointing out that not only is sugar the first ingredient, it's also not the only sweetener there.

Right. Wheat and honey have naturally occurring sugars, and corn syrup is a highly-processed unhealthy sugar.

Also informative to look at the nutrition facts on the label, which shows that one cup of Golden Crisp has 21 grams sugars.  One teaspoon of sugar is 4 grams, so the total sugars (sugar, corn syrup, honey) in one serving is the equivalent of 5 teaspoons of sugar.

My guess is corn syrup has a much higher concentration of sugars (especially the “high fructose” variety) compared to (processed) cane sugar.

The amount of honey is probably minimal, but it's a good bet there's a significant amount of corn syrup.

BTW, WIC (in NJ) gives yogurt, but they only allow low fat or fat-free. The kosher fat-free one has 40 grams of sugar in an 8 oz serving. That means 8 teaspoons of sugar in a cup.

Imagine putting 8 spoons of sugar into a coffee? But that's what WIC wants us to feed our children, because after all, it's fat-free.

WIC  also gives fruit juice.   ::)
Do you or your children like to drink your sugar? 25 g sugar in an 8 oz glass.
Cola has 26 g of sugar in 8 oz.
