With the chaos going on there it’s not surprising that there’s a reporting lag in (COVID?) deaths. The real test will be what the data shows three months from now for same original 13 day time period, if it’ll still show close to 41 or reflect the 1000+ processed there. And if not, excess mortality numbers, assuming those could be trusted.

It's amazing that over a year into this we still have lines like
Quote
While state ministers and local authorities had been warning about the second wave and preparing action since February, there appears to have been a vacuum of leadership within the central government, with Modi staying largely silent on the situation until recent weeks.
As if that is the reason behind the second wave

Anyone who’s been to India knows that whatever official number they say, it’s a lot more! Not that they’re lying but there’s just no way that they actually test everyone and actually know what’s going on

Don't have to go to India to figure that out   ;)

UK cases started rising (very small upticks almost every day) a few weeks ago, and it's being attributed to Indian variant B.1.617.2. Ironically this started just after India's daily case counts peaked (they've since dropped significantly from the peak).

There was talk about this variant causing a future case count increase in the US as well. Personally I'm not so concerned because a vast majority of US vaccinations are mRNA and much more effective than AZN which is what most of the UK was vaccinated with.

Certainly promising, but could still cause an uptick despite 70% vaccination, even if R stays below 1 and it peters out.

the head of clalit pointed out that the Indian variant might be proving Israel right that the better option is rather getting people fully vaccinated than giving one shot to more people as the UK did because it seems like one dose isn't very effective for the Indian variant

There is no “right” here. One dose might be more effective against non-Delta (Delta is what the WHO calls the Indian variant now) COVID, while two doses might be what’s needed to protect better (but still not 100%) against Delta variant. The one-dose-sooner-to-more-people approach has been around before the Delta variant was widespread beyond India, so this point is moot.

Also, Israel had vaccine supply and administration capacity to vaccinate their entire adult population with an mRNA vaccine within several months, even today many countries don’t have assured access to that.
