Stuffy nose, coughing etc. Infants can develop very rapid breathing and low oxygen, hence the large number of infant hospitalizations.

If anyone has high risk kids be sure to look into getting monthly Synagis shots. It usually won't cost you anything for the first couple months.

Question is why are there so many hospitalizations now. And I think that article mentions because it skipped  a year. A few different theories.

Theres a theory in the pediatric world right now that many children didnt get exposure to the usual winter bugs (rsv, parainfluenza, influenza, old corona) this past winter becuase of all the covid restrictions and consequently didnt gain natural immunity to it - and therefore there may be a summer wave of usual winter bugs as kids start to interact with each other more. Its something that played out in Australia in their summer (December this year), and were starting to see in the inpatient pediatric floors.

That doesn't answer the seeming increase in hospitalizations.

Perhaps people are more vigilant with a fever these days or a low pulse ox than they were in the past. Or perhaps there is no increase, just people are talking about it more. Need data...

I'm assuming these are all babies born less than 6 months ago and therefore most likely haven't been infected with Covid.

Could they have antibodies if their mothers had covid?

I believe there has been studies that the antibodies are passed to baby. But I understood the question to be if there's an underlying condition that a covid infection caused which is making infants more prone to serious effects of RSV.
