I just got another appeal for the family of a wonderful man who died suddenly.
I'm so angry!
He was a low wage worker, so he obviously didn't prioritize life insurance.
But his family can't live without his income!

I'll give.  Especially since the niftar is a friend of a friend, but it's another reminder of why life insurance is necessary.

Who are you angry at?

What will your anger do? Will it motivate anyone to take positive action?

You state that "He was a low wage worker, so he obviously didn't prioritize life insurance."

I am not sure how that statement makes sense. Low wage workers get life insurance to match their earnings potential, just like high earners. The low wage worker might be more limited in his coverage choices, but unless he is at risk of being evicted, life insurance should be a top priority as it protects the financial baseline.

That being said, we never know what other people's circumstances are. Some people are uninsurable. Some people need a little more pushing and hand-holding in making decisions.
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

For low wage earners it is harder to make every day expenses. Harder to justify life insurance when they are trying to feed their family.
Only on DDF does 24/6 mean 24/5/half/half

Yup, it’s a tough call to put life insurance before shelter, food, and clothing. Adequate coverage (even term, and even for a low earner) in his 40s, not the best rating, could be cost-prohibitive.

Personally I have adequate-ish coverage, but if I really wanted full coverage it would squeeze me.

Yes. My anger isn't productive.
I think I'm angry at him for leaving his responsibility on us.

I spoke with him, he mentioned to me that it wasn't in his plan to leave so early but due to unforseen circumstances he had to go, he hopes to be back at his first opportunity

I am well aware of the difficulties and hardships of struggling to make every day expenses. During my toughest financial times keeping my life insurance (even before I got into the business) and disability insurance in-force was always high on my priority list.

That being said, it is just a matter of awareness and priorities. If something is important enough, it finds its way into the tightest of (unbalanced) budgets. Unfortunately, the poor man often gets the most expensive choices (just like with credit - the person that needs it least gets offered the best terms).

Just my personal experience in case it helps someone: It took 3 years to finally sign the papers and start our plan.

Its just not something many people like to deal with or think about.

Indeed. Which is why agents get paid. To help people think about it and deal with it.

I got my plan after someone at a Shabbos table was complaining for like 20 minutes that younger light don’t know about life insurance and how one should make sure to have it. A few month latter a very pushy sales man got me to get insurance those two together is probably why I have insurance today. If not it probably would take me a few more years of it being in the back of my mind till I got around to get it.

Really? He also gave a chance for his family to unfortunately struggle. Rather let him do the mitzvah of taking care of his family, and you find a different way of giving tzedaka.

He's not here any more. Let's be respectful of the dead, regardless of our feelings of current realities. There are other ways to illustrate the point (which I agree with).

Come on, everyone. @ckmk47 is one of the nicest and respectful members here (that I know of). We can allow a little venting. And if I'm not mistaken,  the only one here who actually donated is @ckmk47 !
And seriously, be happy that he gave you the opportunity to do this mitzvah?! That doesn't even deserve a response.

Was this some major estate planning? An agent/broker should be able to have a term application in after a 45min appointment and then you may need bloodwork, telephone interview with the insurer, or a health history form that is accessed via a link sent by the carrier to your email, depending on the carrier, coverage amount and age. I’ve had clients that there applications dragged on for many months but that was because they wouldn’t answer the phone for the telephone interview or for the exam/bloodwork scheduler, or sometimes for my follow up calls.  The average turnaround from application until policy is issued is 3 weeks, it can however take 2-3 months for example after waiting a month for medical records from the doctor they find the applicant saw a specialist that wasn’t disclosed on the health history, now they have to wait another month for the records to come from the specialist, however even in these circumstances the process has sped up as many carriers now access the medical records via patient portal when available.
