Seems like it. I found this article online,  https://www.doctorofcredit.com/american-express-increases-credit-card-limit-to-5/. Didn't read through it yet.

I currently have 5 Amex cards so I understand I will need to give up at least one of those cards in order to get approved for new ones. What's the best strategy here?

1. Proactively close one of the cards. Wait X number of days, then apply for the new card I want
2. Apply for the card I want, then call reconsideration line and offer to close an existing card in exchange for an approval

Anyone with experience here?

I think either works. I personally prefer to first apply for new one. One reason being that they might deny you for another reason, and then you closed card for no reason..

Yep, that's what I was thinking as well. The only downside I can think of is that it means there is no chance of getting an auto-approval, and will require speaking to someone

You should proactively close a card, IME they won’t open it anyway until the card closure processes and you’ll probably have to apply again. At least it’s usually not a hard pull.

I have gotten a few cards opened on the spot while on the phone as soon as they closed the old one
