What is considered a downgrade for a rental car
« on: February 26, 2012, 12:16:54 AM »
IY"H I'm renting a car this week at JFK, and the lowest price ( $44 per day) is for a minivan which I don't need.

I'm considering booking the minivan and then asking them to downgrade me to a reg car. My question is, are upgrade/ downgrades based on the class of cars, or is it based on the pricing of the cars?

Not sure that answers my question. Could be they did that for you because the full size was a cheaper rate than the minivan but in my case it's more expensive.

Hey its prob even cheaper.
The whole point here is that:
and the lowest price ( $44 per day) is for a minivan

when i reserved it the full size was about double the price of the minivan. they had to give me a car bec i was underage but they dropped the price without me asking.

99 times out of 100, a minivan will price more than a full size car in the reservation system.  Must be some crazy rental inventory quirk....

At the rental counter level, they will always view a minivan as a more expensive car than a full size -- I suspect that if available, you'll be able to trade your minivan for a full size or SUV (IF available).

Good luck!

I've had this exact situation with Six T in Miami and ended up getting a Full Class with a paid Minivan.

Doesn't sound like ZCN cares whether he gets a reduction in the price -- he just wants to make sure he won't get stuck driving a minvan and looking very uncool  :-[

I think the clear answer is that it's possible you'll be stuck with it if they have NOTHING else, but in general, they would be HAPPY to give you something different if they have it available, as the minivan is generally more expensive.

Exactly. And it's a total waste of space; I'm the only one that will be in the car
