"Ummm... I see you have a sizable surplus. Can you spare any maaser for me?"

 ;)

Did you know I have a brother with 6 children who earns below the poverty line? And a first cousin with a family of 10 who was evicted last year for not being able to afford rent? Well, if I don't give them why would I give you?

So give them! ( If you can obviously)

If the original post was serious, I'm sure there are reasons for it. It was just worded a bit... harsh.

I agree. it's not a situation that I'm enabling. Hardships are due to current unfortunate health circumstances.

Which is why it is healthy that it is done without them knowing where it's coming from. Less of a chance of it being expected.
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

To bring this thread back to life...

I was thinking recently of all the people I know who inherited full-fledged summer homes, upstate or elsewhere, and their parents/grandparents were not considered well-to-do. Now, most people nowadays struggle with owning just one home. What changed?

This should really be extended to my general observation that the prior generation had a much easier time making ends meet.

How ?

That’s my question. They definitely seemed to make it work with much more blue collar professions.

Starting salary in the 90's was $500 a week for someone just leaving kollel, you were able to buy a house for 200k in Brooklyn.

2021 - starting salary is $800-$1000, houses aren't 400k.

For starters, cost of living is way higher, and starting salaries are pretty relevant....

What professions are you referring to? And assuming someone is leaving kollel after being married with a few kids, that’s barely enough. (FWIW I left kollel when my first kid was on the way, and still feel that was the responsible move to make. And I already had my degree and CPA under my belt, which isn’t that common, either.)

today’s real average wage (that is, the wage after accounting for inflation) has about the same purchasing power it did 40 years ago.

This has been well covered over the past few years - this is just one of many articles/studies about this. It's one of the driving motivations behind the Occupy Wall Street/1% movement.

We’ve had tremendous asset inflation, while next to nothing goods & services inflation for the whole of 2000’s. CPI doesn’t include assets, so fiscal policy was pretty oblivious. Let’s see how things play out that CPI is flashing red…
