this

The cost of a piece of meat twice a week, or a washing machine don't begin to make a difference.
And the difference from zero car to late model car is maybe 1 kid tuition

The tuition issue might actually be a sign of greater wealth in the Jewish communities. It used to be the schools had fundraisers that would work hard to fund the Yeshivos and חדרים. Now the administrators just throw the burden on the parents - because they can.
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

Some continue to fundraise regardless of the tuition.
An established school is well off

I would say housing, tuition, and health insurance are the three largest expenses of the Jewish household, followed by food and (high standard) clothing.

Some continue to fundraise regardless of the tuition.

Some even continue to coerce parents to fundraise for them (hello, Rayze.it et. al)

Rayze.it

Off topic, every time hear this platform's name, I imagine a petition to burn something down.

Another area where we differ from our parents/grandparents. Although it's still not a standardized habit, some treat it as a luxury but many as a must.

Food is waaay above health insurance. Clothing is too with a large family. By far.

Health insurance is very dependent on the family. It's much more subsidized than pretty much any other "staple" or common expense in a very large number of households. Transportation is an under-rated expense, IMO. Can easily run 4 figures a month, between the vehicle(s), gas, insurance, tolls, etc.

FWIW - my parents (A"H) would be in their early 70s if they were alive today. While they didn't not go to public schools, most of their friends from shul did. My father said that at one point Abraham Lincoln high school in Brooklyn was nicknamed "Avraham Lincoln", and would close for Sukkos and Simchas Torah, because more than half of the kids and 3/4 of the teachers wouldn't show up - we're talking the mid to late 1960s.

But their generation did utilize day schools. There are very few of these summer homes being inherited now from you grandparent's generation.

Most comments are from non Jews.
Got a chuckle out of this one: Reading the comments and a lot say cut out the cleaning and holidays, I disagree as this will increase the therapist costs.
Only on DDF does 24/6 mean 24/5/half/half

Bh I grew up in a house with nine siblings keh.

There were times that my father had a good job and time that he did not the budget that they kept then and some of it now is a lot different than what you would expect in the current world

The cars if they even had 2 cars and this is in Miami where you need to have a car but at times we had to take the bus. We're always old cars. Even today my parents drive cars. My father got at government surplus auction for pennies (my parents both drive decommissioned old police cars... Cue blues Brothers "our mother of blessed acceleration, please do not forsake us"

Clothing was neighborhood swap, thrift shop etc

My mother often bought the cheaper day old bread. In the years before school vouchers, My parents could not always afford tuition.

Despite the chabad school's advertised policy "no child shall be denied a Jewish education for lack of payment" we were indeed kicked out of school

Rather, pulled out of class in the middle of the day and forced to sit in the administration hallway till our mother packed us up. Scars I still bear today .. waiting for someone to request mechila... It's never too late

In the end, many of us were home schooled at various stages

Things got better bh, everyone attended schools right for them and bh we all turned out fine!

Actually the last wedding was kind of self administered.. I doubt it cost more than 15k and was a fantastic wedding for 250+

I think you just gotta really prioritize. Its very hard, there's a level of budget that makes some feel poor.

As one of the people noted, perhaps the family may need to move to a more affordable community?

Florida now has fantastic vouchers bh (and the schools still bleed parents *ahem*)

We almost never ate out when younger, rarely pizza, high cuisine for us was mermelstein when in ch 😂

No vacations, my parents idea of vacation was crown heights for summer

This!
It’s a two way street. A board member of a local school told me that as long as the people spend money on luxury vacations and fancy cars, they can afford tuition.
