There are very few people on the right who ever really thought he wouldn't pardon him. Most of those surprised are on the left because they actually bought what he was saying. The whole pardon question never had anything to do about Hunter anyhow but rather about Trump and that is why they are up in arms about it. We can just poke fun at the dumb game they played.

When someone does something wrong and gets away with it, unless they have their own Hirhurei Teshuva and return on their own, they will forever by stuck in the mud they got themselves into.

But when someone does something wrong and pays for their crime they have a much larger chance of realizing that crime doesn't pay and more of a chance of them not repeating their action, if at least because of Yiras HaOnesh.

Jon Stewart made a similar point. Most people don't fault Biden for the pardon. He's done with politics, has nothing to lose, and is using whatever power is at his disposal to help his kid. He doesn't care what anyone thinks about it. The real issue is how Democrats made this the focal point in defining their party. They stand for law and justice. No one is above the law. Look at our leader's son. This is who we are. Whoops....

I think Biden really did intend to let his son sit. Things changed when his party trashed his chances of a decent legacy. He has nothing left to lose now, and justice be damned.

The way they allowed him to expose himself and then blamed him for the election losses. This implosion will overshadow anything he's ever done politically. It's not a scandal, it's just how he'll be remembered.

Him being a career politician to whom legacy is important. I think he was willing to put the optics first, until he was thrown under the bus. Then it became about what he could salvage of his life, and his son's life was all that was left. There's no way he would have pardoned him until he was out of office, because it would handicap him.
