I heard from a rav that he once asked Rav Chaim Kanievsky what he should tell his kehilla when a man from his shul passed away while travelling to eretz yisroel to perform a mitzvah. Rav Chaim told him that it was this man's time to die and he had the zchus to be niftar while performing a mitzvah in eretz yisrael. The rav wanted to apply the same message here. It was time for these people to go but they were zocheh to die in a holy place on a holy day.

The above video clarified this idea for me. This bochur may have been young but in his short life he had already achieved perfection. He was ready to go to olam haba.

I was not aware the term 'mashpia' is used outside of Chabad. It's the first time I've seen this.

Father and son thanking officer who saved their lives.

Would like to shout out and thank all the first responders - EMT's, cops, and anyone who was involved in the rescue process. Many literally risked their lives, potentially getting caught in the crush, and indeed some ended up injured. Furthermore, the response time and speed at which they operated was incredible. It's hard to fathom but I believe this tragedy would've been much worse with a "normal" response.

Ouch. And most of us are guilty of the same. But kudos to you for recognizing that people mean well.

What a great article. I went to be Menachem Avel and I had nothing to say, only deep raw pain.

Quote
Over this past Shabbos, one of the survivors from Meron, gave over something quite unbelievable, when relating his experience:
When he was entangled among all the other trampled people, he (this survivor) managed to find a small passage of air that kept him alive. In those precious minutes, this survivor heard another person saying Shema, knowing clearly that he was about to return to His Creator. And then, this victim, after saying Shema, continued: "Whoever is on top of me, I am moychel (forgive) you completely." And those were the last words heard from him.

There is much to learn from this incredible line, but perhaps 2 things to take out.
1.   The first, is that the people who passed onto the Next World, were not simple people. A person whose primary final thought in this world, is to be concerned about the possible feelings of guilt or regret of the one who is pushing him down (even though it was unavoidable), is not a simple person. It is a person who lived for others.

2.   The second, is that we are meant to learn from them. Though we don't know the Cheshbonos Shamayim (Hashem's perfect wisdom), we do know that it's meant to shake us up. Each person knows where they can improve. So just from this, perhaps we can learn to consider the feelings of others, even when we are in difficulty. As Reb Chaim Vilozyner said: "A man was born for others, not to serve himself."

May this be a zechus for the iluy neshoma of Elazar Yitzchak ben Reuven ztl, and all the other victims z"l.

This was told to me by my afternoon Chavrusa, Rav Y Fried shlita, who heard it from his nephew, who heard it from the survivor. They were so blown away by the story, that they called up the survivor after Shabbos to verify. And it was, as I've presented.
