Can you elaborate - what is kna shull
IINM, that's Rich Roberts' shul.

Not sure what he's referring to, but my first thought goes to the sign about how to solicit money from him. He has precise instructions to send a handwritten letter, and how to lay it out. He has a comment about "If you are not willing to spend time writing me a letter, why should I spend time reading it," or something to that effect.

ETA: I feel bad mentioning his name without saying how big of a tzaddik he is. I took my family to his chol hamoed carnival this year, and I am overwhelmed by his generosity. He spends so much to allow other children to have a really enjoyable time. Was perhaps the best Chol Hamoed trip this year, and it didn't cost me a penny.

Not really מענשטליכקייט, rather ethics, but for some reason (maybe because of after Pesach travel), I've been getting almost daily calls/questions recently about people who have suffered a loss and are seeking to somehow buy insurance after the fact and backdate it to cover the loss.

Can we add some training about ethics along with the מענטשליכקייט curriculum?
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

Does it even cross these people's mind before calling you that what they're trying to do is fraud? Do they all even conceed that it's fraud after talking to you?

They don't bother thinking about it, they're just trying to transfer their problem to someone else.

Transferring their problem to someone else would be soliciting donations

That's another approach used by some people seeming to transfer their problem to someone else, by no means the only way

My guess is some of these people are trying to buy their way out of a problem, so they're willing to pay. What they haven't stopped to consider is that for someone willing to assume the cost of their problem, the premium/fee would have to be higher than that cost.

"I died on Pesach, can you sell me a life insurance policy"?

No joke. I once got a call or knock on my door in the middle of the night by someone whose father had just passed away, after lapsing their life insurance policy a while before (not a client of mine) asking me if they can rush to reinstate it before the death certificate is issued.

Is it even ethics? This is straight theft.

If one takes the absolute truth approach, people might not listen. Need to introduce it gently.

Honestly, I'm not so sure in this case. It's kinda like Freddie calling it the Starbucks "method". People often excuse these things as shtick "that everyone is doing". If I came to you thinking that and you said, "heck no, that's fraud. That's stealing!" I'd be disabused of that excuse very quickly

Very unfortunate, but at least they had purchased coverage in the past, not someone who wakes up to consider insurance only after the loss

Except that the person was obese and allowed his policy to lapse (though IINM he was struggling financially).

This morning in shul a travel agent asked me about someone who went to EY and forgot to get insurance, and now has some issues, asking what he can do. My response was: if someone jumped out of a plane without a parachute, what can he do? The TA tried to say: well, if someone jumped right after him and reached him with a parachute, that could help. To which I retorted: That is not something HE can do. The person who jumped out without making sure he has a functioning parachute cannot do anything for himself.

I think it is better to first understand the impossibility of legitimately doing what they are trying to do, in asking to buy insurance post facto, and then let them understand that they are essentially trying to engage in fraud, or worse yet, asking someone else to do so for them.

I can't seem to find it now but I remember seeing a really good Calvin & Hobbes about burning down a building for insurance money.
