I can't seem to find it now but I remember seeing a really good Calvin & Hobbes about burning down a building for insurance money.

Doing that while the policy is in force is outright fraud. What we are discussing here is something that didn't happen deliberately, but the insurance just happened to have not been put in place prior to the event. That doesn't fall into the same category, does it? /s
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

I'll paraphrase based on what I remember:

"I'm bored"
"Me too, what should we do?"
"I know, let's burn down the house for insurance money"
"Good idea!"
[watching the fire]
"Which insurance company should we call?"
"I don't know, let's call them all and see which one offers us the most money!"

Except that the person was obese and allowed his policy to lapse (though IINM he was struggling financially).

Very unfortunate, when you have to choose between food/shelter and life insurance premiums, it’s an easy decision.

The TA tried to say: well, if someone jumped right after him and reached him with a parachute, that could help.

Not possible unless he has some sort of propulsion.

What would your response be in the case of someone who thought that they had purchased insurance , only to find after the fact that there had been a glitch and it hadn't gone through?

I would empathize with them, and if/where appropriate would stress the importance of the email confirmation and printing the insurance ID card.

This morning in shul a travel agent asked me about someone who went to EY and forgot to get insurance, and now has some issues, asking what he can do. My response was: if someone jumped out of a plane without a parachute, what can he do? The TA tried to say: well, if someone jumped right after him and reached him with a parachute, that could help. To which I retorted: That is not something HE can do. The person who jumped out without making sure he has a functioning parachute cannot do anything for himself.

I think it is better to first understand the impossibility of legitimately doing what they are trying to do, in asking to buy insurance post facto, and then let them understand that they are essentially trying to engage in fraud, or worse yet, asking someone else to do so for them.
Similar shenanigans are completely legal when it comes to health insurance, why should people think this is different?

1. Only in the US - courtesy of Obamacare.
2. Even those that are legal, won't generally cover expenses prior to enrollment (with the exception of Medicaid).

My point is that while logic would dictate that it is too late, there are many times that the rules allow it. Hospital stay insurance is another example, there are plans that will pay out for a hospital stay for childbirth immediately after enrollment. While this is technically before the stay, it's quite obvious that a hospital stay will be required shortly and insurance will pay out many times the cost of the stay. You are very familiar with the intricacies and differences, but your average person is not.

If the first person tries to slow their descent by increasing drag while the second person reduces drag it can be possible.

I don't think it will be possible to create that much drag without equipment. It would need to be from VERY high and the second person would need to be lightning quick in following out.

Quote
The most common number you are likely to hear in relation to skydiving is 120mph. This is a useful number as it represents the average speed that people fall at when ‘belly to earth’

Quote
Speed Skydivers simply try to fall as fast as possible. By pointing their heads at the ground and streamlining everything else, they can achieve much higher speeds. The current world record is 373.6mph – straight at the ground and measured over a vertical kilometer.
Granted that is the world record, but the difference is still very significant.

Is there enough time in the approximate minute to catch up based on the difference?

I never realized that there was a dispensation for chessed in such cases.

A family member who lives OOT told me that she recently called a well known appliance store in Lakewood to discuss options and order an appliance. They told her right away that they don't ship to her location but that that would be happy to advise her about which model would best suit her needs. They spend more than 15 minutes on the phone with her.
This is something that I try to do in my own line of work. I find that it helps when we keep in mind that our efforts for parnassah are just hishtadlus and not the actual source of the parnassah.

Well said. Rabbi Reisman (I think quoting Rav Pam) often says that you can do the same exact job and have completely different outcomes. If your mindset is just about making money, all you'll end up with is money. If your mindset is that you are helping people and the money will come, you end up with money and schar for the chesed.
He quotes a story about when there was that blackout in NY. One of the CY ice cream companies had a generator and allowed his competitor to use his extra freezer space. You can only do that if you have chesed mindset and bitachon

+1000000000000000

There is no customer, competitor, or associate who can change even one penny of how much someone makes. I have seen this over and over again. There have been those over the years who have tried to take advantage of my not hiding information and each time it became very visible very quickly that I gained more than any loss they could have possibly caused.
He often mentions that his father, of Reisman's bakery, had a competitor who's bakery was damaged in a fire. His father immediately contacted the competitor and offered the use of his own bakery after hours so that he would not lose his accounts. When Rabbi Reisman questioned his father why he would do such a thing, he answered, "I have no doubt that I will not earn a dollar more or less than i'm supposed to so why not help a yid?"

Thank you @dasmo801 @ushdadude @aygart I'm really happy basically all of this made it into the Ami this week. Really inspiring stuff.
