Can we stop posting videos of our bretheren dying?
« on: May 02, 2021, 08:46:10 PM »
Over the past few days countless videos of the moments following the Meron tragedy have been shared on social media (including DDF), and I've been thinking about how awful it must be for relatives of the niftarim to see these videos or hear about them. It's bad enough that so many families in klal yisrael just lost a parent, husband or child; they certainly don't need their relative's last breaths being shared endlessly online.

True, most of the videos of the recent tragedy don't focus on an individual person, but do you not think it still hurts? And some do show specific people, like the horrifying video of a dying child helplessly reaching out to a cop before collapsing. I can only imagine that family's horror and trauma when they find out that that video is out there.

Some (including tabloid-style frum news sites) have spread these videos simply as news content to satisfy people's itch to see what happened. I'd like to think that most on DDF are above that, but it seems that we still want to debate whose fault it was and did the police block the path and was there a gate and was the gate was pushed aside before people fell or after. But can we maybe forgo figuring it out in the interest of protecting the privacy of klal yisroel's newest yesomim and almanos? Can we leave the graphic videos for the state commission or a court to decide whose fault it was?

TLDR: STOP POSTING VIDEOS OF YOUR FELLOW JEW DYING!!

I'll admit, most people watch to satisfy the curiosity, but if you think about it it's very insensitive and should not be spread to the public.

I found out about the horrific tragedy on a whatsapp group, a sibling said something along the lines of, "absolutely awful what's happening in Meiron, do not look at the pictures going around".

B"H I was able to heed her warning and have not seen any pictures or videos of the event itself.

The stuff went around so fast there are undoubtedly relatives and friends who watched their loved ones die on video without even knowing they were there. What a sick, twisted world. All for the sake of being first with the gossip.

This isn't a new phenomenon. I discovered that a very close relative of mine had died during childbirth from pre-whatsapp text messaging groups.

The sharing of names, pictures, and videos is so beyond the pale it's crazy.

Thank you for this thread.
In addition, watching all these pictures and videos only desensitizes us in the long run

The timing of this article is eerie.
I had the same thoughts when I saw the article this Shabbos. The Mishpacha has an article about sharing pictures of people dying, and the Ami had an article about people dying in Meron.

In particular there is one 'Jewish' news site that thrives on click bait/ knowingly false articles and gruesome images of every tragedy. This site needs to be boycotted and shut down.

I have heard that R' Mattisyahu said that watching videos of retzicha is bad for the neshama, similar to watching videos of giluy arayos. (Obviously in addition to the etzem issur there). While this isn't the aveira of shefochas damim, I'm sure it's not good for the soul either

Same here. Reading it on Shabbos, I found it eerie after what just unfolded.

One thing I'd add is that I find it appalling that some of the fundraiser pages for victims' families are using pictures of the rows of body bags.

I hate to get dramatic but just picture this: At 11 pm Mrs Young Almanah finally finishes crying her brood of fresh yesomim to sleep and gets a minute to herself. She picks up her phone to see who donated to her family's page so she can thank them personally and she's confronted by what? A picture of her husband lying on the ground in a body bag among dozens of others. Who's gonna take responsibility for her tears??

I know the organizers definitely mean well and likely want to get people's emotions to encourage donations, but please just post one of the thousands of happy moments of a father with his beutiful family- don't use the pictures of the tragic end!!

There was one media outlet that had a picture of a smashed hat sitting, abandoned, with other stuff strewn around it. It portrayed a certain feeling without having to show any graphic pictures, yet I thought it was very effective in stirring emotions.

ETA: Found it. There is something haunting about this picture. It tells of events that happened here just before. As though the hat is a surviving witness to something too graphic to describe. It's weird, but that's the vibe I get from this picture.

If anything speaks to the severity of this inyan, I think this sums it up:

כל אלמנה ויתום לא תענון. אם ענה תענה אתו כי אם צעק יצעק אלי שמע אשמע צעקתו. וחרה אפי והרגתי אתכם בחרב והיו נשיכם אלמנות ובניכם יתמים

I saw someone posted it on twitter before shabbos, and was sure it was an old article. Didn't realize it was from this week till I opened the magazine
