How long before Bar Mitzvah day do various communities start putting on Tefillin? Any ceremony/celebration/lechaim?

IINM in Skver they start a month before, elsewhere it's on the day turning 13, the morning after the BM. I've learned today another tidbid about Lubavitch.

In the yeshivish crowd, I think there are three prevalent minhagim. 3 months before, 1 month before, and day of, with 1 month before being the most prevalent by far.

No other ceremony, but some people do go to a rosh yeshiva or rebbe to put on tefillin by the first time.

Correct. Talking of all the boys from the various chassidusin in my class which my vauge memory tells me it was on day turning 13.

Regarding RT; What I've seen is that most start putting them on after the Chassuna and some after the shuna rishona, with the exception of Nadvurna einiklech (Rosenbaums, Leifers etc.) who wear them even as bucherim. They have this awkward rectangular shaped Tefillin case since they don't need the larger ones for the Talis space.

From the bar mitzvah. IIRC, it used to be from 18 (?), but the Rebbe encouraged moving it up to straight away after the bar mitzvah.

Prior to 5736 (Purim IINM) I heard that older bochurim would write to the for permission to start RT (as they became more serious in learning).

I believe the common custom in Chabad us not to make a ברכה until you're sure you're doing it right.

על פי מנהג חב"ד[8] נוהגים להתחיל להניח תפילין שני חודשים לפני יום הבר מצווה, וכעבור מספר שבועות - בברכה.

כאשר בתוך חודשיים אלו חלים ימי החגים, יש הנוהגים להקדים מספר ימים בהתאם[10].

ההכנה לבר מצווה בתחילת הנחת התפילין היא באותו זמן הן בנוגע לתפילין דרש"י והן בנוגע לתפילין דרבינו תם[11].

No intentional ברכה on RT, though it is said that at least once in one's lifetime one will make the mistake and make a ברכה and daven with RT.
