Isn't he a politician?

Is he? Any doctor who takes a position on COVID is now a politician?

Just want to point out that there’s a couple ways that someone can pose a medical question to a rav:

1. What should you do medically
2. You explain all the scenarios and he tells you what to do al pi halacha, or he says that if you do tshuva/mitzva/etc, you’ll be fine.

IMO, number 1 is an option in very few cases. The rov would have to be someone especially knowledge in that specific area of medicine and would have to have sufficient respect for the medical arena to differ to the when necessary. In my limited experience I have known one rov like that, one who I was comfortable asking any medical shaila and relying on the response without hesitation. He was mentioned upthread. חבל על דאבדין.

Option 2a is something that I believe is the proper course for a frum yid whenever there is a sofek about the proper course of action. (Although I would substitute "tells you what to do" with "advises you of the proper mehalich based on his understanding" because that's what my rabbaim would do.)

Option 2b, I'm not going there.

just saying....

i have had personal experiences where a rav's guidance was better in every way and im speaking medically
these rabbonim are experts in specific areas and they are in constant contact with specialists from around the world
speaking with them doesn't mean giving over what the doctor said
scans are sent to them to review and they themselves speak with your doctor constantly

I think you're talking about medical advisors who may be rabbis, but aren't advising in a rabbinic capacity.

These guys are giving halachik advice. But are trained to understand enough medicine to be able to give it.

my point was that they are not doctors they are rabbonim and advice is a very light term for what they offer
they guide people medically from start to finish even when there are no shailos

That’s where the “Rabbi Dr’s” come in handy. :)
I think it was Rav Chaim Ozer who was asked to recommend a Rabbi for a certain community but was told the individual must be credentialed as  “Rabbi doctor”. Rav Chaim Ozer replied that when the rabbi must have a doctor right next to him it’s a siman that he is ill....

Different kind of doctor. He was referring to PhD's, IINM.

Rav Avraham Steinberg might be the single active doctor/rabbi that is truly an expert both in medical halacha (unparalleled) and the practice of medicine, he is a pediatric neurologist. I can't think of anyone else these days.
Rabbi Dr Akiva Tatz, was a practicing Dr in SA

Most smart Rabbi's would ask what did the Dr. say. Other that try to act like Gd would just give you an answer based off their opinion.

Do you know of any that do this ? I know quite a few that won’t answer & will send you to a מומחה.

What about Rabbi Dr. Glatt from the 5 towns? He might not be a Talmid Chacham of the same caliber as Rabbi Dr. Steinberg (I simply don’t know, who am I to measure that?), but he’s certainly both a Rabbi and a Doctor.

There are very few people who have done as much for the health, both physical and spiritual, of the community as Dr. Glatt.

I suppose there are certainly more than one or two :)

I can say from personal experience, trying to run/lead a shul and be a full time doctor working COVID floors in a busy hospital is a recipe for burnout  >:( But i am certainly no Buki, nor medical expert...

+1, it was a different time and a Rabbi-Dr. meant an enlightened (as in Maskil) Rabbi

I would guess he was saying it more about it being a requirement.

This whole discussion is ridiculous..
There are many more Rabanim heavily involved in Medical world then people think. And their medical knowledge is definitely enough up to par to help with guidance on any medical decision. Read R Micha Cohns books/email blasts.. In certain areas people such as R MZ Feldman are definitely "specialists"
I'm sure @aygart knows better than me, but in Lakewood there's medical conferences for Rabbonim all the time to keep them up to date.
