Would it be fair to say you look at "show restraint" as a dog whistle?

If they would say anything at all along the lines of "We compliment them for showing restraint and hope they can continue" that would be different than saying it in a way that contextually is going to be received as saying that they are going to far. I can hear someone calling that a dog whistle but I would say it is more than that.

I think it is a lose lose situation. What if they say both sides need to show restraint. Now they are equating the actions which is wrong.

Hamas needs to stop not show restraint. Either way, there is one way to win and that is by keeping their mouths shut, but these are politicians we are talking about.

It's fair, but IMHO it's worse. Because it's usually not said like that in a vacuum. This comes along with condemnation and accusation for restraint already not shown. The request for restraint is usually to say, "Stop killing all those kids like you've been doing 'till now and show some restraint."

Politicians are criticised all the time for not speak out on one issue or another. You are probably right that such criticism has less power than when they do say something and it's wrong.

i listened to the 9 oclock news this morning on reshet bet.
the news was 3 minutes.
about 1.5 minutes of it was discussing the jewish lynch of the arab guy in bat yam.
all the mortified politicians calling for justice to be served etc.
barely 10 seconds about the 130 rockets that fell throughout the night in israel.
no mention at all of the arab lynching of jews yesterday in akko and tamra.

disgusting, one sided narrative of self hating jews.

You need them to spend 3 minutes on how bad rockets are? Things that are obvious, even if they are worse, need less elaboration.

I think he has a point. It's news, not a gemara shiur. Obvious or not, the coverage should reflect the reality on the ground. It's impossible for them to be perfect but it does seem skewed in a certain direction. Noone bothers pointing out that people profiled as far right as Smotrich unequivocally condemned any violent response, while the Arab MKs who the left and Bennet want to sit with can't even muster enough courage to open their mouths in the best case.

Maybe, although ToI did make a point of publishing far-right and religious leaders' condemnation of the riots. I just think that when something is an anomaly, and especially one that seems to be egregiously out of character, it's only natural that it gets more attention than something that is less controversial, even if it's worse.

Fair enough. Truth is no coverage can do justice to what a huge number of families went through the last few night and the mental and emotional impact that has.
