Solar offsets all of your usage?
Not all, but more than enough to take the sting out of any crazy gas and/or electric rate hikes this winter. I generate ~6mWh a year and use an additional ~2mWh from the grid. I got solar before switching from gas heat/wall AC's to mini splits, which added to my excess usage, but I wouldn't have been able to add much more to my size roof without a canopy system and much higher cost.
What type of heat do you use?
High heat (rated down to -13F I believe) mini splits from Daikin. Our gas fed steam boiler was damaged in a fire and we decided to rip everything out and go with mini splits. This will be our third winter with them and we love them - never had an issue of them not handling the cold. It's a small house, so we tend to heat only the spaces we're using while we're using them. Massive comfort upgrade from the temperature swings of a 3 floor 1 zone system and massive sound upgrade from noisy wall AC's.
This is something most people don't appreciate about solar. Figuring out how many years it takes to break even is nice, but now you don't need to worry about market changes. It becomes a fixed monthly payment that doesn't change regardless of market fluctuations and inflation.
+1, and now technically my break-even is earlier because the energy generated is more valuable than initially assumed in the calculations.
