I think a bigger factor was how long it took people to recognize symptoms and therefore quarantine - early on, only people with fever and cough were considered symptomatic, and asymptomatic transmission was not recognized.  Once people started to be more cautious about going out with ANY symptoms now known to be covid related, as well as testing more exposed people, the numbers went down.  There were still new waves, but they were clamped down earlier.

This isn't true. There is plenty of science to demand masks, but it's very dependant on the circumstances. If you want to say the circumstances don't warrant a national mandate anymore, that I can agree with.

I said demanding. I don't think there is any need to demand masks when anyone who wants can go get vaccinated. If someone feels they should wear a mask, they're more than welcome to continue wearing it for as long as they want.

Again, I still disagree. If there is a local outbreak, or an area where the virus is still very prevalent, masks should be demanded in places where there is a high risk of transmission (indoor spaces with high density and/or poor ventilation, etc.). There can still be a public safety component on a local level.

At some point life goes back to normal. When the risk from COVID is lower than the risk from other illnesses, I think we very clearly passed that point.
