Avoiding deer while driving
« on: June 01, 2021, 10:50:57 PM »
On a recent overnight drive across Pennsylvania, I noticed lots and lots of deer everywhere. There were tons on the side of the highway and there was even one running alongside my car. There was a decent amount of roadkill as well, including a huge deer laying in the middle of the lane. BH I wasn't in that lane but there was no way I could've avoided it had I been there.

Are there any tricks to make these types of drives safer? I saw stranded vehicles with smashed-in front ends as I was driving by and want to know if there are any methods that can be employed to avoid that.

Cousin was driving to Pennsylvania otw to his wedding. A deer jumped out in front of him and he swerved around it but crashed into the side barriers. B"h completely fine. I'm not sure if there is something specifically u can do. Really have to be very vigilant. It actually happened during the day when its a lot easier to see them.. avoid driving at night if possible.

DO NOT SWERVE. Hitting a deer is a lot less dangerous.

This is me last year after some numnut swerved to avoid a deer and pit maneuvered me instead:

If you see a doe cross most likely a buck will be right behind.
Only on DDF does 24/6 mean 24/5/half/half

Don't they sell some sort of whistle you can attach to the front of your car that makes noise when going above a certain speed to scare deer away?

I've also heard that it's best to accelerate at the last moment so the car isn't tilting downwards on impact. But that's not practical advice

I don't think it's safe/feasible to accelerate, but I've heard to take the foot off the break so that the car bounces up a drop and minimizes the chance of the deer flying through the windshield.
