Employee pre-hiring testing and assesment
« on: June 04, 2021, 12:04:56 PM »
I am going to start looking to hire an assistant in the near future. Hopefully, some of my past experience might help me do a better job than I have done in the past in this area.

I have been thinking of using outside tools to assess and test candidates (looking at both skills and personality) so that I make better decisions.

I started googling about it, and came across a few companies in the area. Does anyone have experience or recommendations?

I see services with a great range in pricing. While I do realize that even paying $1,000 for this would be cheaper than a bad hire, if I can get similar results for much less, I wouldn't want to spend so much on it. This is especially true when some of my skills requirements would limit the pool of potential hires to people within the community.

I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

Myer Briggs for personality & Strengths Finder for aptitude test. But you gotta understand how Myer Briggs works in order to benefit from the results. I'm personally not a fan of testing potential clients & I don't believe they like it either. Traditional researching potential candidates beforehand & interviewing them in person should work. I would pose personality questions at the interview obviously in a respectful & non-insulting manner.

What if I know my weaknesses, and know that I might not be great at interviewing candidates (or just don't have the brain-space for it)?

Maybe outsource to a recruiter? If you’re willing to pay to assess a candidate for whom assessment will determine are not good fit, and then you have to pay for a subsequent assessment, why not let the recruiter assess for you and trust their reputation/recruiting-aptitude.

I use https://www.omniagroup.com/ for many years. They do a good job of giving an assessment of the potential employee's working personality. They also do on assessment of your business and grade the employee on how well they match with your needs.

I've been using Pan Assessments (https://www.psionline.com/talent-management/). they assign you an individual rep who can help choose the many assessments available to customize it per job and candidate. I also use https://www.backgroundsonline.com/ for background checks. They also have a rep assigned for you and can set up different background checks depending on the position you have open.

Recently spoke to a business owner about hiring, and he swears by these personality tests. The company/software he uses helps him develop the criteria for each position, and he finds the assessments to be very insightful and accurate. Will try to find out the name if anyone is interested but I know it wasn't cheap.

If it is good, it is definitely cheaper than hiring and training someone who just isn't right.

How about a working interview?

I don't see that as practical. How would that be different than hiring someone on a trial basis?

Agreed, otherwise no one would use it :D

How about a working interview?

Working interviews/trial basis is expensive and time consuming, and some candidates aren't willing to accept anything less than a full commitment. Also this tool is not only useful for hiring, it can also help you determine what role this person may be able to develop in the future. A great employee does not necessarily make a great manager or leader. A working interview won't tell you this.
