Reliable, trustworthy car dealers?
« on: December 22, 2011, 11:30:29 AM »
Hey all,

I am looking to purchase a car from a reliable car dealer in the Brooklyn area.

I have spoken to a car dealer in Boro Park recently, who has told me that for $300, he will go down to an auction for me, find me a car, make, model and price of my choice.

In other words, I will get the "wholesale" (auction) price, and I will pay the dealer just $300 for this service.

Does anyone here have experience with this? Is this a risky way to purchase a vehicle?

Also, in general, can anyone list a few trustworthy car dealers in the Brooklyn area?

Thanks

Not in Brooklyn, but I have used Lakwood Auto Sales in the past and found them to be extremely honest and fair

You could get seriously burnt. I know someone who did that and the car had serious transmission issues. Let's say it wasn't the deal he hoped for (probably much worse than just buying a used car).

Well, when you buy a used car from a dealer, isn't it essentially the same thing. They go down to an auction and bring it to their lot. The only difference is, that once they bring it to their lot, they jack up the price by $1,000+.

Hehe, that's the guy I was referring to in my OP. So you're saying that you recommend this guy, and I can fully trust him?

Not at all because when you buy a car by a dealer he will be responsible thay the car should be in good working order. Here by paying less you are absolving him from such responsibility. And while for a dealer it is worth it since not every car has major problems, if you are buying just one car you have a greater risk of losing out.

Well, the above statement stands true if you are dealing with a very, very honest car dealer.

Suppose the car that your friend got with the serious transmission issues was bought by the dealer himself, do you think the dealer would actually fix it up?

Most car dealers would do a "duct-tape" fix, so that the customer doesn't realize there's a problem until 6 months after he buys it, and by that time, the dealer has no responsibility for the car anymore (most dealers give a 30 day guarantee, which is a total joke)

It is well known that car dealers are experts at hiding issues.

When you buy from a dealer you can always get it checked by an independant mechanic before you buy it. When buying at an auction you dont really know what your getting. Especially if the guy you go with is also buying for himself he wont really have time to check the car you want properly plus they dont give you much time with the car.

Depending on what type of car you are looking for the auction may not be the best price.

I recently bought a used Odyssey and surprisingly the cheapest place I found the van was a certified used car at a Honda dealer. $2k cheaper than auction.
