4 days on the ground in Ukraine
« on: June 21, 2021, 01:48:46 AM »
Ok... So here it goes, first trip report! It's probably going to be a bit rusty (I think I just explained why ;) ) so please bear with me :D
First and foremost, I'd like to thank @Dan and all the other wonderful folks here for being an invaluable source of never-ending info. Having turned 18 just over 2 years ago and thus being relatively new to the CC points & miles game this is my first ever trip paid for in miles AND in a premium cabin so if there's a few rookie mistakes I may have made please feel free to enlighten me ;)

And with that... Let's begin!

I can't for the life of me figure out how to embed amazon photos here. If someone can help I have some photos I'm more than glad to share.

Flights
06/06/21 KL0642 JFK-AMS (Z World Business)
06/07/21 KL1385 AMS-KBP (C EuroBiz)
06/10/21 KL1386 KBP-AMS (C EuroBiz)
06/10/21 KL0643 AMS-JFK (Z World Business)

Hotels In order of where we stayed
06/07/21 Holiness - Mezibush
06/08/21 We didn't really sleep anywhere (more on that coming soon)
06/09/21 7 days city hotel @ The Menorah Center, Dnieper.

06/06/21
We left from 770 at about 3:40 pm when our taxi showed up. After driving around CH picking up all the other guys we started heading to JFK T4 to catch our flight at 6:40 pm. Originally the taxi told us $50 for a minivan but after we added a few stops he went up to $65. After splitting it worked out to about $12pp. Still not a bad deal.

Arriving at JFK, the place was very full. Maybe even mobbed. BH for sky priority check-in but even that took a few minutes.
Being that I was flying business on KLM I had access to the DL sky club in JFK. Currently no showers due to covid but still a nice spacious (albeit large and busy) place to have a drink and get a little work done on the sky deck.

At about 6 pm I left the lounge and started making my way to the gate... And... AHHHHHH the pleasure of turning left upon boarding! I always thought you guys were nuts for going so crazy over it until I did it myself!

KLM on the JFK-AMS leg the way there was a 777 with a 2-2-2 configuration. Although business was pretty empty so I nabbed seat 3H taking a gamble no one would take the window next to me. It paid off, quite well.
Dinner was served toward the beginning of the flight. It was a cold Borenstein box consisting of a Beigel's roll with hummus, fruit, some kind of pan-seared fish and a chocolate cream puff. Followed by an entree of chicken breast and veggies. Really wasn't too bad and I'd definitely enjoy had I been a bit more hungry. But I came prepared with my very own BYOK... A chicken avocado wrap from Mendy's in CH. Highly recommended.
Overall was a nice comfortable seat and bed (by my n00bish standard at least) although my one beef with it was the lack of air nozzles... And you know how the Europeans feel about A/C...
Nonetheless, I still managed to get a decent few hours of sleep and before you know it we were beginning breakfast service.
Breakfast was again a Borenstein box with a Beigel's bagel, cream cheese, jelly, honey, fruit and orange juice. Followed by an entree although I don't remember what it was and I realized I didn't snap a photo of it.
Shortly after breakfast, we began our descent in Amsterdam. Overall the flight was good but the temperature was kind of upsetting.

Arriving in Amsterdam I set out straight for the KLM Crown Lounge (Lounge #52 in AMS).
The lounge was a nice big lounge. Personally, I liked it better than the delta sky club in JFK. Although I didn't have time to check it out and desperately needed a shower. According to the computer they have there to reserve showers there were no available showers for the duration of my stopover but after having asked the attendant and watching her push some magical buttons on her computer I was instantly handed a key to a shower room. The shower was great with nice pressure but they only had an all-in-one shampoo and body as opposed to a separate shampoo, conditioner and shower gel. But, I must say it did smell great!

After the shower, I headed straight to the gate to catch my flight AMS-KBP.
This flight was typical EuroBiz on a 737. But the crew really went out of their way. Sometimes to the point that it got overbearing, asking if I was "ok" every 10 minutes (Let's just say I may or may not have consumed many a diet coke on that flight) ;)
Upon landing in Kyiv we cleared passport control and customs relatively quickly (Negative PCR and Ukranian travel insurance required) and our amazing driver Rusland from Poyehali was there waiting for us!
Here's a tip, if you're considering going around Ukraine touring all the kevorim etc. don't skimp on the car. It's literally where you'll be living for most of the trip. We got a nice extended sprinter with full-on recliner lazy boy seats and it did not disappoint. Trust me. The van had wifi as well which was a nice plus, although I wouldn't consider it better than the regular 2g t-mobile gives you while roaming.

To Be Continued...

Yup, same issue.

I can't find a way to embed their images here properly, sorry.

It seems there's no hope... What's the easiest platform to migrate just a couple of images over to?

Rusland hard at work

So after settling down into our van we headed to the Jewish community of Kyiv to eat lunch at Taki da
(Note: It may be more worthwhile to head straight to Zhytomyr for food if you're en route to Mezibush and Barditchev. Ask your driver)
IMG-20210607-WA0066 by El Capitan, on Flickr
I like how it says "Day Off" as opposed to just closed. Gives a more human side to things. Personal opinion.

Service was slightly on the slow side but nothing terrible. Food was eh overall. Avoid the royal burgers, I didn't have any but the other guys all hated them. Best dish was probably caesar salad. I ordered a falafel, wasn't great. Only dish I have a photo of is falafel.

After lunch, we began our first long drive to Barditchev.
After about 2.5 hours we arrived at a gas station and... There we were! A gas station right across the street from R' Levi Yitzchak's Kever.

IMG-20210607-WA0081 by El Capitan, on Flickr
Now you may understand why all my photos are going to be somewhat socially distanced. In general, Ukraine isn't exactly a Kohen's destination.

Right now Barditchev doesn't have any big visitor center or anything but there is a sign that says coming soon.
IMG-20210607-WA0080 by El Capitan, on Flickr

IMG-20210607-WA0074 by El Capitan, on Flickr

And with that, it was time for the next (relatively) long drive to Mezibush.
Screenshot 2021-06-21 182742 by El Capitan, on Flickr

About halfway there, we made a stop for gas and to daven mincha. In general, I always like to wonder if I'm the first person to do a Mitzvah etc. in a certain obscure place though considering Ukraine's rich Jewish history I'd be doubtful at best.
20210607_205214 by El Capitan, on Flickr

Before going to Ukraine I've been heavily warned about the roads and how they are extremely bumpy and uncomfortable etc. however when I got there I was pleasantly surprised... Until we really started getting rural beginning with Mezibush. Let's just say it was a bumpy ride for at least the last half hour.
Hungry and tired we finally arrived in Mezibush.
Holiness charges about $160 per room with free dinner and breakfast based on double occupancy. Rooms had A/C which was a big big plus!

After settling down we went to eat dinner in the restaurant. The food was good but tasted way better due to how hungry we were.

Meat and mashed potatoes.

After that, it was time to go to bed so we can be up early the next day... But not before a visit to the Baal Shem Tov's shul!
It's a bit of a walk. Maybe about 10 minutes. More importantly, it's not well lit and there are dogs... and it's in the middle of rural Ukraine so at least personally I wouldn't go myself. But hey! Each to their own. Other guys didn't seem to have as much of an issue.

Great TR. As a fellow Kohen, I am curious on which Kevorim you found more accessible and which are not (in middle of large cemeteries).

Aaaaaaandd.... PART 3!!!

So before leaving we went to the mikvah and davened at the Ohel of the Baal Shem Tov. Because after all, isn't that why we came to Mezibush?

Ohel of the Mitteler Rebbe, Nyezhin.

There's a relatively new visitor center that I thought was the caretaker's house until we walked in to use the bathroom (yes, we asked) in it there's a mikvah and perhaps a coffee station as well. Unfortunately, I forgot to take photos.

And, with that, it was time to hit the road yet again. This time the next stop being Haditch, the resting place of the Alter Rebbe/Baal HaTanya
Screenshot 2021-06-22 231120 by El Capitan, on Flickr

What I mentioned about the roads in Ukraine being really bad really hits hard when nearing Haditch. About half an hour or so before you realize it comes with free tickets to Six Flags, Ukraine Edition (COVID-19 safe, from the comfort of your car)

Rusland navigating the rocky Ukrainian roads.

Rusland was explaining to us through our interpreter (yes, I'd highly recommend if possible bringing a friend who knows Russian. Highly useful) that the major roads in major cities are paid for by local wealthy people but in poor areas, nothing happens because the government won't pay and there's no one wealthy.

Anyhow, after some ermmmm... Turbulence, we finally made it to the Kever of the Alter Rebbe.

Shnitzel and some other Russian type of dish.

The dessert was fruit. Can't find photos for some reason.

After dinner, it was time to begin our next long drive. This time to the menorah center in the Dnieper where we'd be attending our friend's wedding. Alas, the real reason why we ended up in Ukraine, to begin with.
Screenshot 2021-06-23 000840 by El Capitan, on Flickr

However, we didn't know just how long it would really take...

Rusland was upset we couldn't stay the night but we needed to get to the Dnieper and we didn't want to risk leaving the next day.
Rusland also insisted on taking the longer route on google maps saying it had better-paved roads... Let's just say that didn't age well...
Long story short what was supposed to be only a 5 or 6 hor drive ended up taking a whole 10 HOURS!!!! Hence why we didn't have a hotel room for the night. That van was a good investment. And no, the roads were not smoother. Trust me.

Rusland: Now like "Rolls Royce"  ;D

Anyhow... at about 5 am we finally arrive at menorah centre to park in the 7 days city hotel. Don't have photos unfortunately but I'd spend the extra money and go to the menorah hotel (there are 2 hotels in the menorah complex, 7 days and menorah) next time. 7 days is more like a hostel. No A/C etc.

Part 4.

Thursday 06/10/21

After a beautiful wedding at the menorah centre, it was time to head back.
I was scheduled on KL1386 KBP-AMS for 2 pm. Being that flights on the DNK-KBP route weren't conveniently timed, it made the most sense to drive. In general, I always stress out before a flight. Especially when it takes a good 6-7 hours to get to the airport!
So Rusland showing up a few minutes late definitely didn't help my anxiety :)

Goodbye Ukraine

The drive from Dniepro to KBP wasn't terrible and the roads were relatively smooth.

Arriving at KBP Rusland pulled over right before we got there and tried playing the game for more money. When we showed him we weren't having it he started complaining about the $100 bills we gave him claiming the banks charge an extra fee for big bills. No clue if this is true but highly doubt it. anyhow after we told him this is what we have take it or leave it he stopped and started calling friends at which point some of us got a little scared but then afterwards he proceeded on to KBP... B"H!

Rusland and the Boyz

Upon arriving in KBP we needed to take covid tests to be allowed back into the US of A. On the lower level, there's a place you can do it in KBP. Rapid antigen test cost approx $20. Charged in UAH but CCs are accepted.

Results took about 20 minutes.

After that it was time to check my bags and hit up the lounge... don't get too excited though it is Ukraine after all...

I realized I only have a video and no real photos of the lounge.. but what I do have is a great story.
I settle down in the lounge when all of a sudden a heavyset police officer looking like he came straight out of the KGB stories we've all heard approaches me and asks in a thick accent... Excuse me, are you El Capitan? To which I replied in the affirmative. Officer: Please come with me. He escorts me out of the lounge and down the escalator up until a heavy metal door that says on it "Staff Only". Beeps the door open and there sitting is a soldier in uniform at a small desk. He instructs me to hand over all my documents to the soldier. In the room, it looks very industrial. lots of cement and big machinery whirring in the back.
He takes me into the elevator some 5 levels below and takes me into a side room. There, on a big metal table is my suitcase.
He asks me, did you put something in your suitcase? I reply nothing I can think of. He says maybe a power bank? And then I remembered that indeed I left a power bank in the suitcase because I thought that you're supposed to leave them in the checked baggage and not the carry-on. Apparently, the opposite was true. Rookie mistake on my part.
So after thoroughly inspecting my baggage (and when I say thorough I mean like taking every piece of boxers and pair of socks and inspecting it holding it inches from his eyes...), he handed me the power bank told me to put it in my carryon and made me sign some kind of log and brought me back to the lounge. Quite the way to say bye to Ukraine!

Once it was time to start heading to the gate I tried to stop off at the gift shop on the way. I see a bunch of stuffed animals with price tags that say 15 on them and I think hey! 15UAH is a great deal and I take like 5 of them. As I make it to the check out counter the lady stares at me blankly and says "Prices are in Euro" ouch!

After which it was time to head to the gate to board L1386 to AMS

The flight was only delayed by 10 minutes and that was early in the AM on the way to the airport so it was good that we took off shortly after getting on the plane.

Arriving in AMS I headed straight to the Crown Lounge once again. For some reason, this time we landed in a part of the terminal that required us to go through security to access the other part where the lounge and our departure gate were located.

This time, instead of just taking a shower I had time to check out other parts of the lounge. The place is huge.
I asked the restaurant if they had any KSML options to which they replied in the negative.
Upstairs you have the sky bar which is on the porch overlooking the tarmac and is great IMO. Great view. Not much service though and kind of had to get my own drinks by myself. #FirstWorldProblems

Eventually, it was time to board the 787 to JFK. This time was in a much better 1-2-1 configuration and most importantly had... air nozzles!!!

Here's the KSML pics. I found Borenstein on the way there to be much better. This one tasted weird but it was a very different style so maybe that's why. For some reason, I forgot to snap a photo of the cold box.

Don't ask me what this was.

After that and a couple of hours of shuteye, it was time to land... BH I must say this was a great trip and can't wait for the next one!

Signing off,
