“The mayor of Surfside, Florida, described a chance meeting with a 12-year-old girl at the Champlain Towers South collapse site Sunday night that “hit me the hardest.”

“Last night, when I did my late night pass at the building there was little girl. She’s about 12 years old and she was sitting by herself,” Surfside Mayor Charles Burkett told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer Monday.

Burkett said he knew the little girl from a previous encounter and understood that either her mother or father was a victim of the Surfside collapse. Burkett said he found her sitting near the rubble pile scrolling through prayers on her cell phone “all by herself.”

"She was reading a Jewish prayer to herself, sitting at the site, by where one of her parents presumably is," the mayor said.

“And that broke my heart. And I’m going to find that girl today and I’m going to tell her that she just needs to come to me for anything she needs because that’s the face of this problem, of this disaster right here – that little girl,” Burkett said. “By herself, completely lost, sitting there, on the deck, looking at the pile of rubble imaging one of her parents is in there. That should never happen.”

+1000. Just horrible. I can't even imagine what a 12 yr old in that situation is going through. If anyone's tefillos are going straight up to Hashem it's this kid's.

Just saw this infographic. Scrolling through the pictures really gives you an idea of the sheer magnitude of this tragedy (even though this hasn't been updated in a few days and only seems to include 60-70 victims).

As others have said, each of these people were a world of their own. Just terrible to imagine how many people's worlds are broken right now.

They were. The daughter was also supposed to be there that night, but bh Hashem had other plans for her.

I had birchas kohanim from the father this past Rosh hashana in a backyard minyan. So hard to understand how he's still missing.

Medical Director of Hatzala of South Florida was going to ground zero everyday working on the building helping families etc.

But each day he was stuck in crazy traffic trying to get into Surfside and then to the building. So someone reached out to me to help get a deal on an electric scooter he wanted, but they all shipped in a few days and he needed it asap.

So he called a local store https://fluidfreeride.com/ miami location, and asked about a specific model he wanted which said it was out of stock online.

He explained the situation and asked if they had that scooter available, if he could please buy it today.

The owner told him to come down to the store. When he got there the owner brought out a brand new $1,400 scooter and handed it to him, for free! A higher end model of the one he was asking about.

Wished him luck and to keep up the good work.

As the remaining rubble from the collapse of a 12-story oceanfront condominium was cleared away Wednesday, a Florida judge said victims and families who suffered losses will get a minimum of $150 million in compensation initially.

That sum includes about $50 million in insurance on the Champlain Towers South building and at least $100 million in proceeds from the sale of the Surfside property where the structure once stood, Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Michael Hanzman said at a hearing.
