Windows 11
« on: June 24, 2021, 02:39:35 PM »
It looks like it will be a redesigned look, app store changes and some other small things. I didn't see anything of note. It's a free upgrade like windows 10.

The name just seems off to me

None of those are backend. @Yo ssi, what backend stuff are you referring to?

I could be remembering wrong, but I thought I saw an article about it getting rid of loose ends left from windows of old, and tying things more seamlessly together. Which would help for everything from better driver support to better battery life and efficiency.

Sounds good, but what I initially found when I googled Windows 11 was that it was mostly UI-type changes with the same stuff under the hood as Windows 10, so I was surprised when I saw you said otherwise.

Correct im having a hard time to understand why windows needs an OS update to update their browser, while google or anyone else manages to update the browser independently

In my eye a graphic change is a small change, anyway I can't find now any similar article, so I could be mistaken.

Especially after anti-trust and browser choice where many people switched to Chrome/FF because they were superior.

Not really. Lots and lots of low level changes since then. Thankfully Microsoft tries to keep compatibility so it's not noticeable to the end user.

New Edge doesn't need Windows Update. But there are some underlying stuff that gets used in Windows (equivalent of WebView in Android) that needs Windows Update to update it to use the new Edge and not IE.

Correct as edge is chrome white labeled

I once heard that the reason windows needs an OS update to update the browser is because the GUI is based on IE, Similar to HTA

Chromium, not Chrome. And the GUI is not based on IE, but there are components that used to use IE.

It’s more nuanced than that. Windows was built on top of DOS and architecturally and for backwards-compatibility a lot of those things stuck around. But it’s not fair to say that Windows 10 is the same under the hood as pre-Windows (3.1) DOS, when computers have evolved so much in those 25+ years.

The comparison (or lack thereof) is to Windows 10 because that’s what many people are using now, and the question is whether to upgrade.

Of course it is more nuanced than that, but the windows model is to evolve and not to rebuild. There may be only a few bits of DOS left but that is because they all evolved away.
