All? How far back? You’re probably starting at 3.1...

Sorry for the late response..
Windows 95 was my first heavy use os.
Read an enthusiastic article on launch of Windows 95 :-) https://www.itprotoday.com/windows-server/windows-95-preview#menu
Notice: "Microsoft's plan is for Windows 95 to run at least as well on a 4 megabyte 386DX as Windows 3.x does."
That's 4 MB RAM..  :) ;) ;D

Windows 95 ran well on 4mb RAM? I don't remember either way, but that's impressive. So much resource bloat nowadays.

The enthusiasm in that article is legit. '95 might still be the biggest paradigm shift in Windows computing thus far, many of the UI elements/enhancements still used today were introduced in that version.

Notice it says: "Microsoft's plan is for Windows 95 to..". Not sure that was the end case.

True. Most of our Windows experience today was born in Windows 95.

Because they push it slowly to devices based on chances of the device to potentially have issues.

Ah, so this is what the gradual rollout is, smart.

They want you to know that your computer is eligible. The actual update gets pushed through separately

if the reason for the delay is to check if your device will have issues with it, then once I see it is in fact eligible why do I need to wait for the device to upgrade itself rather than do it myself?

TLDR: my device is eligible . What concerns are there to update it myself now?

The check to see if your device is eligible, is mainly checking your hardware components to see if it's eligible, the software can still have issues regardless.
That being said I don't think there are any major concerns for updating it yourself. The real question is what's the rush? What are you missing that you need Windows 11?

Then go for it. I would/did.

It's just that you were asking what's Microsoft's thinking behind them recommending not to do it before you get it pushed to your device, and to that the answer was as said that they like to push it in device groups based on certain things going on in that device, starting with the least issue'ish.

But in general there are not many big issues with Windows 11 and you should not be very worried to upgrade.

What's the safest way to do a clean install without losing data, I would prefer to format the HD and then reinstall

I would recommend taking the time and doing a spring cleaning, just save the file you need.

Had it for over a month.

So far it's been a good upgrade, definitely smoother, and starts up way faster than my phone. In no way compared to Vista or 8 upgrades.

Makes Windows 10 feel very outdated. In fact... There is BETTER seamless compatibility of programs vs 'tile apps'. The start button in the middle can get some time getting used to.

The only issue, albeit a noticeable one, has been the lack of drag/drop to Taskbar to pin or to open a file in an open program. Although there are hacks out there an a presumed expectation that Microsoft will reinstate it.

A good idea in theory, but we are bound to lose some functionality :-\

Terrible. If I wanted dumbed down and inflexibility I’d get iOS. I use legacy cpanel because anything that’s in-the-weeds either isn’t there or is hard to find.
