Selling to ones self to use up amazon gift cards
« on: January 04, 2012, 03:14:11 PM »
Im looking to buy a particular product with my SW sign up bonus points using amazon GCs. I can find better buying options elsewhere outside of amazon, and someone recommended that I buy it elsewhere, then sell it to myself between two amazon accounts using the GCs and hence turn my GCs into cash to pay off the item I bought.

Anyone have experience or insight?
If I sell it to myself S second hand presumably it shouldn't have tax...?
If that is an issue I can just make the shipping address in NJ who h should eliminate the tax.

What % does amazon take?

You'll do better just selling the GCs.
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

Thank you Dan and Smurf.

Thank you HelpMe.  I wonder whether perhaps this link would be more relevant?
I understand that tis for selling goods on amazon.com as opposed to the other link which is for using amazon payments.

Seems to me from here that at the moment the best option would be to get walmart GCs instead of amazon and use them to buy visa GCs @ 105.38 for $100.

I've seen comments around here about an activation fee for Visa GCs but the Visa GC website doesnt say anything about it.

Thoughts?

You only pay the fee when you purchase the card. I am not sure if you are planning to use the Visa GC’s online. Some Visa GC’s only let you register your zip and not the full address. These will fail on some online stores.

The Visa GC website seems to me to imply that they can all be registered for use online  :-\

Quote
Online or phone purchases:
To make an online or phone purchase, you will need to register your card. You can do this by either calling the issuing provider, or by visiting their website. This information should have been supplied to you when you received the card. It may also be printed on the back of the card.
When you make an online or phone purchase, the name, address, and phone number you use will need to be exactly the same as the information you provided when registering your card.
If the information you provide differs from what was provided when the card was registered, the transaction may be declined.
You can verify or update your information by visiting the card provider's Web site, or by contacting them using the toll-free number provided in your card materials.

Hope this helps:

Can the Vanilla Visa Gift Card Be Used to Shop Online?
The short answer is yes and no. Yes, because Vanilla Visa has information on their FAQs addressing the issue of using the card online. They do encourage card holders to use their mailing address when using the card online. They do not explicitly say that you cannot use the card online, but they do acknowledge that your personal information is not linked to the card. And that is where the problem lies. Since your personal information is not linked to the card, when the online merchant tries to verify the name and address you provide against the information on file with your gift card issuer (just like the do for credit cards), they are not able to match the information against your Vanilla Visa card, which leads to the card being rejected. I am not sure why Vanilla Visa will not come out and just tell their customers that. Some people buy these cards with the hope of using them online only to find out they cannot. That can be frustrating.

I've entered wrong information (for cc purchases) just to see if it works and so far never been rejected.

I can tell for a fact that many online merchants will reject these cards. It depends on the AVS that they use. Address based verification will fail.

If they say Vanilla Visa on the package you will only be able to register the zip code for the card. Now it depends what AVS the online merchant that you use the card at uses. If they verify the address it will fail, if they only verify the zip code you will have no problem. If you use them at a B&M they will work fine.

The Visa GCs at Walmwart are Vanilla - means limited use online
:(

Anyone know whether B&H verifies address or just zipcode for online purchases?
