If someone would like to be entrepreneurial about it, I think there's an opportunity for a stand-alone website dedicated to frum travel resources. Ad revenue from local stores, restaurants, and attractions could make it into something more than just public service.

The biggest value (information-wise) is in the places where there's the least potential for significant ad revenue. Either way, it's very niche and will take a lot of coaxing for it to gain traffic.

You'd get much better value from a DansDeals sister site called DansDestinations (DansDests in short, or DansTravel or something) with destination information, reviews from Dan, DD-community edited information, etc. You could also include local minyanim as a feature.

I heard a few shluchim in a tourist area talking a few months ago. They were saying that the people who call up about minyanim are the ones that don't show up to the minyan.

Pretty much DDF Destination Guide and Trip Planning board, but in commercialized, non-forum format. I don't disagree.

What about the guys who show up, and then ask some of the people they meet there to join their minyan at the hotel, leaving the shliach without a minyan? (True story)

Simply not true, there are Shluchim in "small college towns" with 3x daily minyanim, granted in that case it's likely the info would be on their webiste.

It's disappointing how he digs his heels in and insists he speaks for other Shluchim too instead of acknowledging that he was talking about his specific situation.

It would have to be a clean and consistent format. Ease of finding information will make-it-or-break-it for whether it takes off. DDF DG/TP is very niche.

Wouldn't fault them if they emailed the Shliach asking about their minyan and he never bothered responding.

This is something I always try to do as well. I'll ask - I'm coming from NY, let me know if you need anything.
If I have to pay for an extra suitcase, I'd consider that my donation (though it's never happened)

I can tell you that more than the actual stuff you bring, the way this thoughtfulness is mechaye Shluchim cannot be overstated.

Hes talking about St Lucia guy complaining about the restaurant question, the answer is 100%, 100% of HIS clientele are tourists.
'His' clientele is the local community. Our Chabad House servers every Jew regardless of where they are from.

I was not complaining about any calls or emails, all I said was that I don't get it.
We have an entire section of our website dedicated to answer all the questions of the many visitors, unfortunately not many people read the website and rather call first.

Sorry I wasn't clear. They met those people at the shliach's minyan which he told them about.

-1. Website management is very poor for many Chabad Houses. A person contacting the shliach once a month to get updated info is more likely to be accurate than the shliach's own site.

A webform sent once a month/quarter-
Has anything changed? Yes/No

Choose "No", end of survey. Site is updated that info is current.
Choose yes, select category of what changed, enter new info, site gets updated and is current.

This is assuming that Chabad has the resources to update thousands of sites regularly (unless they do this already).

I'm not active on twitter. Not going to tell people how to do their jobs, which is why I won't debate @islandjew (welcome to DDF BTW :) ) here about how he runs his business.

I don't think this thread (or any) is the place for these stories, of which I can add about 100, as I'm sure plenty of people can add stories of Shluchim behaving in questionable ways.

The key, for both sides, is to act like a mentch. No matter how many updates you have on your website or how many faq's a frum traveler reads, a jerk will be a jerk, and a mentch will be a mentch.

True, it can be automated, but depends on the platform, may require an expensive overhaul.
