Lol, I thought that was the most ridiculous tweet of them all from him. I find it hard to believe you could find me a mezuman of Shluchim who would say having a little page on the site with visitor info would be in any way distracting from the site or ruin a "small-town feel".
Such an attitude sounds very in-towny to me.

What would be the turn off bout them being open to the public (other than during COVID)

They are open to the public. Anyone who stops by will be welcomed with open arms. There's a difference between that, and doing something which may be viewed as actively encouraging visitors to come. Visitors take up resources, primarily the shliach's time. Some shluchim have more of that than others, and therefore some encourage it and others don't. Visitors can also change the atmosphere of the Chabad House. Some shluchim love it when frum people come. They get to show their communities that their Rabbi isn't the only crazy zebra in black and white. Others may feel that their people feel intimidated by frum people, and it may keep them from connecting or coming as often. I'm sure there are a number of other reasons shluchim have for/against visitors.

I don't know that I agree with his reasoning, but I feel a visitors page would very likely increase visitors. I can't tell you how many calls my father has gotten over the last 30+ years from people asking what there is to do in the area. As it is, he gets a lot of frum traffic, especially bein hazmanim. If he had a page on his site listing resources for visitors, there is no doubt in my mind that he'd see a significant increase in traffic. Now, he's not necessarily opposed to more yidden davening in his shul, but I can understand why others may feel like they don't want to do anything to potentially increase frum traffic.

Again, it's mimah nafshach. If there is significant interest from visitors, then a visitor's page solves your problem, if not, there is no need for the page. and if this is your visitor's page looks like this, you won't have visitors:

Daily Minyan:
None

Shabbos Minyan:
Shacharis and Musaf Only

Kosher Food:
Trader Joe's
Whole Foods

Hotels Within Walking Distance to Chabad:
None

I'm all for the visitors page. But your logic assumes that interest remains the same with or without that page. I'm saying some may fear that the page will increase visitor interest, which they don't necessarily want.

Then the price they pay for that are those phone calls they don't like.

DDMS, DDF, and Dan's inbox are proof that sometimes giving information can invite more questions, a lot of head-scratching, and even a few headaches.

...and that being nice about it can create a beautiful camaraderie that promotes achdus and kiddush Hashem. And can be monetized for a good, honest parnassah.

That's only because Dan doesn't answer PMs or most of those emails...  :P

Yup. People who live in a place that has lots of tourists/part-timers will be less likely to be involved in a place (or shop at a business) that they perceive as tourist-focused.

I don't necessarily think that a page on the website would give that impression, but it can contribute, if you are trying to combat that image.

Didn't go through the whole thread, but one point that can't be repeated enough is that even $100 can be significant for some shluchim. When spending thousands of dollars on a trip that is reliant on Chabad it seems only right to give them a few hundred.

The guy just went 4 months without milk. There isn't much opportunity there.

I only started reading the thread now and got up till here

I met this shaliach at his Monday night barbecue.
Nicest guy on earth full of spirits and dedication.
He also answered me on WhatsApp beforehand anything I wanted to know.

In the long conversation we had I understood that his goal clientele is not from travelers.
He's focused on non-frum travelers retirees, cruisers, yacht, sailors...
