make yourself additional cards on people that have a clean old credit history, it should help a lot.

That is, get someone with a good credit score to add you as an authorized user on a long held card.  They don't even have to give you the card to spend on.
If  you can get more than 1, even better.
AMEX requires AUs SS#.  That's good for you.
(If you pay a stranger to do this for you, it may be illegal.)

Has anyone heard of Tomo credit for people who have no credit or bad credit?  It is 1% cash back, requires no hard pull and is tied to a bank account. How does this compare to getting a Macy's or Kohl's card to build credit?

It sounds like a 'secured' credit card. IDK if it's better than a store credit card.
Either way, use it every month.  Pay your bill promptly.
Over 4 or more months, it should give you a 'credit history'.
