Tisha B’av and the Holocaust
« on: August 07, 2022, 01:18:26 PM »
Tisha B'av is essentially Holocaust Remembrance Day as well.
As part of the "younger generation" (my parents and grandparents were for the most part born after the Holocaust) I didn't grow up hearing personal accounts of survivors, so its even more important for me to attempt to internalize this tragedy for myself and my children.
Last Tisha B'av I came across this compilation of actual footage of the horrors that happened. אינו דומה שמיעה לראייה, it was literally life altering for me.
So I'm sharing it here, it's not for the faint of heart. Or perhaps it is.
Because we must never forget.

Quote
War Department Information Film showing German concentration camps and victims of Auschwitz, Majdanek, Treblinka, Belsen, Buchenwald, and other camps. Originally made with a German soundtrack for screening in occupied Germany and Austria, this film was the first documentary to show what the Allies found when they liberated the Nazi camps: the survivors, the conditions, and the evidence of mass murder. The film includes accounts of the economic aspects of the camps' operation, the interrogation of captured camp personnel, and the enforced visits of the inhabitants of neighboring towns, who, along with the rest of their compatriots, are blamed for complicity in the Nazi crimes.

This really drives home the fact that there are probably hundreds of thousands of people who were completely erased from this earth, without any semblance of a memory

My grandfather's aunt (she passed away a couple years ago. Childless. She was "experimented" on) described how in the cattle cars on the way to the camps they sang the following haunting melody:

In His Judgment G-D is righteous           גאט אין זיין  משפט איז גירעכט
No one can say G-D is bad           קיינער קען נישט זאגין גאט איז שלעכט
He doesn't do injustice to anyone         אום רעכט טוט עאר קיינער נישט
In His Judgment G-D is righteous            גאט אין זיין משפט איז גירעכט

לך ד' הצדקה
ועד יום אחרון הצדיקו דין, ואף אני מאמין ענו, ושרו שירת בטחון

It’s crazy just how real it makes it. I walked around in a daze for weeks, hopelessly enraged that I was born too late to help track down those animals and throttle them. It triggered me to do a deep genealogy search to find out exactly what happened to my ancestors that were alive at the time. For all I know some of them are in the video. They disappeared without a trace, and we have no pictures of them. And at least I now know the names of some of my relatives that were murdered and have no surviving children. If I and my family don’t memorialize them, who will?

Perhaps apropos to post on Chanuka - even in the darkest times we keep the faith and emerge after living through unimaginable evil and rebuild.
