air conditioners work by extracting heat. If you don’t have a hose to the outside your air conditioner will be moving heat from one side of the room to the other side aka doing nothing.

In response to you, and to the OP, the DDMS portable AC purchased by the OP does include a window hose.

I believe there is but you will have a bucket of water to empty every so often

Correct, and in fact it adds heat to the room because the unit generates heat. A dehumidifier is basically the same as an air conditioner minus the exhaust pipe to the outside.

Some portable AC units have a window hose AND a bucket to collect excess evaporate that you need to empty. It can be quite annoying as they're not always designed conveniently.

Yes. I've upgraded to a model with a built in pump to empty the condensate, but that only helps if you happen to have a sink nearby. And I've heard that the pump can fail well before the expected life of the unit. Bottom line is these portable ACs serve a purpose but they take more maintenance than window mounted units.

Yup. I gave up on the portables. An AC guy told me that the portables aren’t as strong as the regular ac’s so you’d need a higher BTU for the same size room. Not sure if this is true or not.

Here's a good explanation of the difference between window and portable units.

Sort of... window units do a good job of shedding the extracted heat to the outside, while portable units shed a lot back into the room because of the path of the exhaust. So let's say (for example) that 10% of the extracted heat gets released back into the room you're cooling, the net cooling effect is the same as a window unit that has 90% of the btu capacity (i.e. for every 10,000 btu of heat extracted by the portable, 1,000 goes back into the room and 9,000 goes outside, so it's the same effect as a 9,000 btu window unit)
