Based on that, does it make sense booking with Delta miles a flight on Alitalia from NYC-TLV and hoping to get the direct flight?
You can always cancel award tickets as long it's not basic economy.

I think so and would actually do this if I needed a ticket in October/November (when chances are lower that they will have their act together and continuation plans figured out).
