Seems like the overwhelming sentiment of US athletes abroad is to take pride in America. It's only when they are here that they have to seem woke and turn their nose up to the flag.

I'm assuming it's simply human nature. When you are at home, you can bicker with your neighbors. But when you meet a fellow cityman at a foreign location, you bond with them and feel a camaraderie.

...turn their nose up to the flag.
Equating taking a knee with turning your nose up to the flag is so warped I don't know how to respond.

I just watched the women's basketball team win their seventh gold in a row. Many talked about how proud they are to wear the USA uniform.
Only on DDF does 24/6 mean 24/5/half/half

Can you elaborate? I'm honestly not sure what you mean, and I'd love to hear the explanation. I always assumed that taking a knee is a way to show that you are turning your nose up to the flag...

It isn't. It is that simple.
In most sports, if not all, taking a knee is a sign of respect.
In Women's soccer this Olympics every game I watched they took a knee before the game. There was no flag or anthem playing. Do you really believe every player was turning their nose up to their country's flag?

Taking a knee in general is used as a sign of respect. Sports players take knees when "in prayer" or during moments of silence.

Colin Kaepernick initially sat during the anthem (for his protest) but then realized that it signified a lack of respect so switched to kneeling.

The whole point is just to capture attention.

So what's the big deal when players take a knee during the national anthem?

They (haters) want you to believe their (players) purpose is to disrespect the flag so it is easier to hate them (players).

But what is the reason to deviate from what is the standard sign of respect?

Does an individual player do it to disrespect the flag and our country, possible.
Most are bringing attention to a cause without disrespecting the flag.
Now their are players that turn their back when our national anthem is being played. I have a problem with that.

I always had the conception that players who kneeled during the anthem wished to object to the notion that America was a great country. They believed that America is institutionally racist, and still has a long way to go.

I'm still not getting a clear idea, and yes, sometimes DDF is the place to get politics al regal achas (translates to: "on one foot").

If anyone is not interested in explaining, can you link an article that accurately explains the symbolism of kneeling?

When a player turns his back on the flag, and the next day he's kneeling, it's a pretty good indicator that kneeling is meant to be disrespectful. Am I wrong for thinking that?

My post was really more for the pun than anything substantial.

I'll try to find an article, but anyone that's followed sports prior to Colin Kaepernick knows that kneeling is used as a sign of respect/solidarity.

Though admittedly at this point kneeling by the national anthem has its own meaning.
