There will always be far right and far left. But I think the middle can still unify to a good extent.

I'm not a political analyst, but as long as we give significant attention to people spewing extremism to attract attention (Trump, DeSantis, AOC, Omar, Tlaib, etc.) we are just going to amplify their voice and mainstream extremism.

Even 60% means 30 on each side and the potential for 40 in the middle

Look at the last two presidents at what "you" feel was the worst time in their presidency. What was the approval rating? Has it ever been below 30-35%?

Fair enough but I define them as nutcases then. 
No matter how bad a president does you always have the nutcases from either side that approve of what they are doing.

Or you don't know what their priorities are.

Someone can care the most about one issue and they'll approve as long as that issue is good with this guy.

And it's hard to judge that.

Yet most American Jews, whose ancestors arrived here in the decades before the Yevsektsiya, have benefited from an open border.  Many immigrants were "wanted men", fleeing military conscription, yet they quickly passed Immigration and were simply advised to walk towards the Lower East Side.

I always think back on that when I see photos of today's migrants trying to make their way here.

It's nice to be nostalgic, but try to remember how many received any benefits. Also, try to remember how many were sent to their eventual death while trying to escape the Holocaust.

Isn't that a reason to lobby for "open" borders?

I'm saying allow the people in, but in an organized humane way. For example, if someone presents as a refugee looking for asylum, they should be allowed in. That is a vital humanitarian role for the US to play.

I'm down for more open borders, but believe that social benefits should be limited to minimal cases. Would also prefer to bring in more immigrants to work for understaffed industries, and would like to make it easy for the smartest people in the world to immigrate as well. In both cases they should have a clear path to citizenship.

In regards to illegals that aren't getting deported anyways, make them work for understaffed industries, become legalized, and start paying taxes.

I was referring to state and federal income taxes, social security, and medicaid. Are they getting on payroll and filing tax returns?
Billions, and even tens of billions does not sound like a high number.
