Find the source of where they are coming from. Usually rotten fruits or vegetables.

Fill about 3/4 cup with a mix of wine or grape juice, vinegar, duck sauce. Cover with cling wrap. Poke holes with pen tip and leave on your counter.

This works IME, but the holes have to be optimally sized, big enough to get in and small enough so they can't get out.

A rotting piece of fruit works too actually.

Or make a funnel with a paper and tapes the edges to a cup/bottle. Just make sure that there is a small hole at the end so they can get in.

A trapped fruit fly will give off pheromone smells to attract more fruit flies to the bait.  On the other hand, a drop of dish soap in the fermented apple juice/apple cider/etc bait will reduce the surface friction and drown the fly so that he won't escape or create new fruit fly larvae.  Baby fruit flies from larvae will escape from the holes in the plastic wrap covering.

Hasn't happened IME, even without dish soap. I guess YMMV.

Which part has not happened for you, the attracting or the drowning?

Are you positive they’re fruit flies and not drain flies? What do they look like?

Trust me, find the source nothing else works in my experience.

For the source:  check sponges, potatoes and onions, and of course, fruit or any other vegetable kept outside the fridge.  You will most likely find a little convention of crawling larvae like maggots at the source.  In the meantime, keep up the apple cider vinegar.  I have also used a fermented piece of pineapple or any other fermented fruit.

Workflowy. You won't know what you're missing until you try it.

Bad red wine works great (either wine that has started to turn or very low quality merlot/cabernets).
