I don't know why you guys are ganging up on @CountValentine . Just pay attention to what he is saying and you will probably agree. The root of the issue here is the Trump plan to withdraw. Trump's "peace" with the Taliban without even giving the US back government a seat at the table is what is leading to so much of the problem. You are concerned about the Afghani women? That is on Trump. You are concerned about retribution against anyone left behind? That is on Trump. Instituting Islamic law? Curtailing freedoms? All on Trump. It is of course debatable whether Trump would actually have the backbone to follow through, but the withdrawal is on him. Biden took that withdrawal and somehow managed to bungle it and make it that much worse than it already was. The idiot got replaced by the fool. The fool's foolishness doesn't take away from the idiot's idiocy.

But let's not forget Biden deserves credit for the vaccine

Trump deserves credit for the development and Biden for the rollout.

No change of heart. Of course the short term results could have been different.
In that case I misunderstood your intention and retract my joke comment.

It remains for this, unless I'm also misunderstanding it.
Wrong.

The problem was how the Afgans handled the pullout.

As Biden said 'you can't force the Afgans to fight their own wars'

I've said it upthread & I'll say it again: this would have happened in 2021, 2031 or 2041.

The blame is squarely on the Afgans, a bunch of backward corrupt cowards.

nothing the US would have done would have made the slightest bit of difference
Utter and complete nonsense.

We could have evacuated vulnerable Afghans and Americans before the drawdown.
We could have kept Bagram Air Base for secure evacuations instead of relying on a hard to defend commercial airport.
We could have provided air support against Taliban advances for some period of time to show that we weren't just retreating and running for our lives.
Among so many other failures here.

I have yet to hear Biden acknowledge that.

No, the main concern is the hasty retreat and embarrassment at the helicopter rescue from the US embassy and people storming the airport and trying to hitchhike on our planes.

How can you have an honest discussion/disagreement with stuff like this?

Trump is a narcissist child, I wouldn't expect him to.
Biden promised to be an adult and not someone who just shifts blame and point fingers. Yes, he's a politician. Yes, I still hold him to his promises.

Most Americans wanted to bring the troops home. There's a reason both Trump and Biden agreed on that. That doesn't mean we should abandon those who allied with us and were promised safe passage.

Either way you abandon them. The only question is how many of them.

The ones that had dog tags and were eligible for US visas. Apparently ~30,000 eligible Afghans and 10,000 US citizens are still there.

Next time you're sipping on a late prepared by an immigrant for less than minimum wage, think of the Afghan who got his US dog tags branded into his chest as his 10 year old daughter was raped before he was executed.
So it's a small thing to allow this to happen? And it doesn't affect future American missions?
