Ideas for Calendar For Shared Car
« on: September 13, 2021, 12:42:11 PM »
I'm looking for ideas for a shared calendar system with a car that is borrowed by a few different people quite regularly. Unfortunately, NYC camera ticketing being what it is*, people tend to get many tickets without knowing, and it's tough to try to figure out who had the car at the given time of the ticket.

What I'd like is a system that the borrower can quickly and easily (like within 15 seconds) mark when they borrow the car, and when they return it. Perhaps scanning a QR code that creates an event on a shared calendar? I'm thinking that if it is more time-consuming than scanning a code, like perhaps typing on a shared spreadsheet, then people might not do it because they'll think, "I'm in a rush, I'll do it soon," and then forget to do it. But if it's really quick, then they won't push it off.

*I say this just so Dan can link to the "Why the heck are you living in NY?" thread and give him that sense of pride and superiority for the day.

Why you are living in NYC can be answered right from within that post. So that you can do the chesed of lending out your car so often that this can be an issue.

Google form with 2 questions (user and car status)?

Save the link as icon on phone. Or print a QR code and leave in car (tape to dash).

Too many steps for each time in and out of car. Also takes longer to find what you need.

I like this. The form generates a timestamp, so that's perfect, and it takes about 5 seconds to fill out the form.

Too many steps for each time in and out of car. Also takes longer to find what you need.

This. And it means creating a group with people who don't necessarily belong on the same group, and there is no need for everyone else who ever borrows the car to know each time someone else borrows it.

With an add-on you can link it up a calendar as well

They’ll never do that, it’ll get used against them e.g. people tracking where the ticket maids are so you can get notifications when they’re in the area.

Do you also need a way to note when the car is returned?

Yeah, the form does that.
Question 1: name
Question 2: pick up or drop off?

I don't think I need it, but if you would, you could add a conditional question if the answer is drop off to add a location where it is parked

Ahh I missed that its 2 questions.

If everyone agrees you can also put in a dash cam as backup in case someone forgets to sign in or out. (At least an interior facing one)

That’s a bit intrusive. Do I really want to be on video the entire time while driving?

I agree that's why it's only if everyone agrees. I personally wouldn't mind the camera but would mind the audio being recorded

The whole point of this question is simplicity. Who has time to review dash cam footage from weeks prior

So I would mount a cheap tablet in the car with the Homebase app OR have each person get it on their phone. Each person logs in or out with a simple pin code when they take the car or return it. Problem solved.
Just trying to do the right thing...

Another option is making a qr code which texts a Google voice number.
