Ask a non-Lubavitcher anything.
« on: September 16, 2021, 11:32:55 PM »
With a disclaimer about the title (if you don't know why, just ask @TimT to look up the reference).

Is getting maftir (or at least trying to get it) throughout the 11 months only a minhag Chabad, or is it customary in other circles too?
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

In yeshivish/litvishe circles, this is the order of aliyah chashivus:

Shlishi
Maftir
[Shishi (if you have an atara or wear a gartel)]
Everything else

So to answer your question - yes maftir is a level above regular aliyas; though maftir yonah is a whole other magnitude.

11 months of Davening by the omud/saying kaddish.

D'oh totally misunderstood. Thought you meant besides for Yom Kippur. Sheesh that's boneheaded.

Never heard of this. But that could because I'm not well versed in hilchos and minhagei aveilus bh

Minhag Chabad? Lol, it's universal. Its brought down in

Maybe the title should be "I need to get out more"

I remember when I learned that not everyone is up the night of the vachnacht, I always thought it's universal

And later found that not everyone celebrates a vachnacht (welcome to Lakewood)

Of course not always so practical if you daven in a regular minyan where they give out maftir.

1. I asked because I mentioned it to someone and he said he only heard of getting maftir on Shabbos before the Yahrzeit.

2. קדיש י"ב חדש? Is that something that's done, or does everyone stop at 11 months?

So no splitting of the minyan into two separate קריאת התורה, or a separate minyan for קריאת התורה before Davening, when more than one person needs maftir?

Never seen that. Only splitting the minyan for Musaf the sahbbos before a yartzeit.

I've also seen stopping at 11 months, but I don't know the מקור. It is because you shouldn't show publicly that you consider your parent a רשע-
 משפט רשעים בגיהנם יב חודש

I think many communities won’t do it for Kaddish either. I know I was surprised when I heard it.

in most chsidish places they will usually give Maftir to an uvel. But there are some that are makpid not to give it for the first 11 months, like skver etc.
