This. As I said it's a Minhag mentioned in Rema from the Rishonim already, but it isn't possible to accommodate every Uvel anyway so it all depends on how much the individual is pursuing. I wonder if it is indeed totally not a thing in yeshivish circles even when one can get maftir easily. @aygart ?
There's an old Russian saying (mentioned in Chassidic tales) that says:
можешь но не хочешь! Which is probably the Russian version of "if there's a will there's a way", but I think the Russian is a lot more powerful (it's a lot blunter, stating: "can, but don't want").
Since in Lubavitch aliyos are NEVER added, it is a common practice to make separate minyanim for Krias Hatorah only. Hence on Shabbos before Yud Shevat you will see tens (or hundreds, depending on the crowd size) of minyanim for Krias Hatorah through the day. Since that is already a custom, it's not such a big deal when there are several aveilim to split up for krias hatorah, or make an extra minyan before or after davening.
