This looks cool. Anyone tried this?
Yes. Works very well.
Can't know how long it will hold though.

One drawback, you can't login to Google maps, so you can't have your saved places.

There are no monthly fee ones:
https://www.worldofcommunications.com/product.php?product_id=2143
https://mehadrin.tech/
Thanks for your help.
Wish there were reviews for that product.

Which specific review? Quote the text.
Cuz the product details very clearly says:Maybe that was for another variant of the listing, or it's talking about the more accurate "life traffic" that your can get with the smartphone app.
Here for example. Hard to know which reviews are knowledgeable.

Q: Does this have lifetime maps and traffic?
A: I think so. I believe it pulls the traffic info from my phone via bluetooth. As for "lifetime"...well, we've all seen these companies come and go with their promises. Nothing that uses the Internet seems to last more than a few years, despite claims to the contrary.

Regardless of how knowledgeable the reviewer may be, he clearly is just ranting about the general "these companies" which may at some point charge for something (something that so far Garmin has not done.) So basicalty irrelevant.

As for what he mentions that it's pulling traffic from the phone, that might be correct since the Garmin DriveSmart 55 has both options, it has built-in old type lower-quality traffic, and also has live traffic through the smartphone app if you have one connected.

For the same price buy a cheap phone and break the screen..
The AutoWays 'phone' is also limited to only Waze/Gmaps. If you break the screen of a regular phone, you may still be able to access more than you wanted or worse once you connect to the car's display. AutoWays is basically a Waze only device without the need for a smartphone shaped device.
